Hello All, We had a Dutch Pantry in Harrisonburg, Va. sometime way back in the mid to late 1960's. I remember my parents taking us there when it first opened after church. The food was good, but we never returned because we rarely ate out since there were 4 growing boys and a limited family budget. My wife, a New York gal, moved down to our fair area in 1972. She worked at that Dutch Pantry and she tells me horror stories of kitchen hygiene and how most of the food was frozen and simply heated up. Places can start out good and go another way to make money. I was a little kid and it was a new, wonderful place for me. Now, it seems I was just a little dumb kid and shouldn't have enjoyed it. Take Care, Fieldthistle

Oh yes indeed! There was one in my hometown of Sidney, Ohio located just west of I-75 on St. Rt. 47 (Michigan Avenue). (On the east side of I-75 was an L&K. I'm sure both are gone now). When visiting my grandmother there at Christmas for a number of years, Dutch Pantry was one of the places we frequented. Once grandmother cooked Christmas dinner, that was all the cooking she did! We either ate left-overs or ate out. I recall that my dad loved DP but I was neither hot nor cold about it. I didn't think the food was that great, but it was OK. (For 1970's era roadside food, I much preferred Nickerson Farms). I haven't seen an actual Dutch Pantry in over 25 years, although recently I did see a place along I-70 either in Indiana or Illinois called the Dutch PAN with a picture of a skillet/pan covering the spot where the letters "try" would've originally been and it still had the windmill logo on it. Again, I remember that it was OK food and the restaurants were supposed to resemble barns like one would see in Pennsylvania Dutch country. They were just a notch above Stuckey's and Horne's IMO.

These comments are too funny! I just ran across this post today, and my mouth is watering for some Dutch Pantry food. Can anyone confirm that as of Dec 07 there are still some out there and where? I would plan a road trip just to eat at one. Apparently I am excited about mediocre food!

Does anyone remember "The Distlefink" poem from the D/P? It was on the menu and kids under 12 could get a free dessert or something if they memorized it.
