Anyone close to a baseball bat factory

Do you know anyone that lives near a baseball bat factory? I know it’s crazy but I want to buy some reject hickory baseball bats. I once read on a forum that they were pretty cheap and also good for smoking material. Now I have a special need for just that size hickory and if it didn’t cost an arm and a leg I’d go pick them up or have some shipped to me. Any thoughts? I have emailed customer.service@slugger.com Jack PS Old wine barrels would also work but the price has to be right.

Thanks but my days of smoking that stuff are most likely long over. Well maybe on a rafting trip or.................. no never mind. LMAO Jack PS this unit would be a power smoker that could fill a room 14 x 20 with smoke in a heart beat. You could get a base ball team high. LOL

Jack, how well do the wwwine barrels work? dont you get some additional chemicals from the left overs of fermentation? I know that cream of tartar comes from the deposit lef on the wine barrels and its pretty astringent. Wouldnt that have an effect on the meat? When I was working at my last Country Club, our chef built a chest smoker from an old hot cart. He put in a heating unit with a thermostat that worked pretty well and used an element from an a small electric deep fry to make wood chips smolder. He tried using those big green Hickory nuts. I think thats whta they wrer(he said so any way) Those big green ball that fall off the trees that are big enough to dent thecar. hed soak them ovenite and put them on his burner with damp chips fron a hickory tree he had in his yard that went thr the chipper. At any rat he had a ton of real hickory chips from it.

Those don't sound like Southern Shagbark Hickory Nuts, but how did his food turn out when it came out of the smoker?

Try contacting companies that make shipping pallets. Some are treated and some are not. Most are hickory from what I've been told. I bet they have a lot of broken slats that would work as long as they aren't treated.

I had always wonderd what those big green things were. In some areas they would be all over after falling out of the trees. Im talking about the round things the size of a med-small apple and green with a crinkly skin. They are as had as a rock. They dont even smash open when you drive over them. As they werent dried out i dont know how important is would be to soak them. i will say that when he put them rigt on the element you couldnt even see the cabinet thru all the smoke it put out. We did a pork loinat low heat for about 8 hours and it was pretty good. Are those things the hickory nut? I had always wndered what they are. if you go in the woods around me they are tons of them!

Make sure you are talking about these (which are hickory nuts): http://www.rayshickorynuts.com/hickory.html and not about these (which are hedge apples or osage orange): http://lancaster.unl.edu/enviro/pest/nebline/hedgeapple.htm

I'm not cooking with hedge aples, they are good to keep mice and other pest away so they are not going into my smoker.

There is a factory in Louisville, KY... I got by there once a month, I will stop by and ask. I am sure you have heard of Louisville Sluggers.

Most wooden baseball bats aren't made from hickory. They're ash. A lot of the major leaguers who were using hickory bats have changed because they splinter so easily and are dangerous.
