Maybe you mean Rax.I believe there are still a few around in the Midwest, but most of them ended up as Hardees stores.

Yeah, I'm sure he's talking about Rax. There's still one in Anderson, Indiana...that's the only one I know about. I actually preferred them over Arby's and wish they had stayed around!

Yeah, Rax had a second go round in Weirton WV and closed shortly after it opened. I ate there a couple of times when I was working on opening up our business and it wasnt very good. Just convenient at the time.

I deffinately remember Rax competing with Arby's here in Grand Rapids, MI in the Mid 80's-Early 90's but I also remember that in the late 60's in addition to Arby's we had 2 other franchises in our town specializing in Roast Beef Sandwiches. One of them was called "Heap-Big-Beef" that had a native American theme interior and their buildings all had a tall peak "A-Frame style shape with a cedar shingled roof. One of those buildings is still standing and now houses a "New Beginnings" restaurant at 28th street & Madison. The other chain that was pretty short lived called "Rix Roast Beef" had a more traditional brick & glass building on Alpine Ave. just north of I-96 that shared a parking lot with a K-Mart and a Radio Shack store. Soon after it went out of business the building became a "Clock" 24 hour coffee shop restaurant that burned down a couple of years ago and now a Q'Doba stands on the site. I remember this particular chain distinctly because I loved roast beef sandwiches even more than burgers back then (They also had a very tasty shaved Stacked ham sandwich with or without swiss cheese). My older sister's boyfriend at that time worked there and he used to bring over gallon jugs of their barbecue sauce that I preferred over "Arby's". The only other chain I can remember that never made it to our town was "Roy Rogers Raost Beef". I had tried that one once on a family vacation out west and remember it as being good too! So even though I've never heard of "Rex" I certainally do remember "Rix & Rax" Uncle Vic - Can you back me up on this one? Also, do you remember Meijer having a restaurant in front of their Alpine avenue store called "Thrifty's Kitchen" serving fast food burgers, fried chicken & fish. It's been an Arby's now for many years.

I actually worked at a RAX Roast Beef for a short time when I had just turned 16 in 1986. This was in Sarasota, Florida. The restaurant itself was unusually attractive in that it was designed sort of like an atrium or greenhouse with lots of glass. The food was pretty tasty to an adolescent, but working there was horrible (no surprise). My primary memory is of the shakes. They were fairly thick and tasty, and had a large amount of whipped cream on top. However, after working there for a bit, I began to hate the shakes, as making them was a true chore and one devoid of the pleasure of eating them!

i used to really like rax as a teenager, i had a friend who worked there and would go hang out. i stopped at one about a year ago in kentucky on a road trip. kentucky seems to be where old chains go to die. ive also seen a jerry's (similar to denny's) and a mr gatti's pizza in ky. anyway, this rax i went to was definitely not as good as i remembered. it wasnt inedible, but i wouldnt stop there for any reason other than a nostalgia trip

We had a Rax here in Nashville in the early 80's and I loved that place. I was so dissapointed when they closed down. My favorite sandwich was their Beef sandwich.
