Anyone remember FAT MIKE'S????

Am I the only one who went to Fat Mike's in the 70's and 80's?
The best chili dogs in the world. Sabretts with mustard, chili and raw onions....He started with a hot dog stand at the Hasbrouck Heights high schoool football field. Then he made his famous (ask Bill Cosby) roadside stand on route 17 south in the Heights. If you didn't eat at least 3 or 4 it wasn't worth going.
His chili cheeseburgers were also among the greatest treats of all time.
Before Devil hockey games in the early 90's my 2 boys and I would invade Fatso's for chili dogs and chilburgers.
Fatso died in the 70's but his family carried on until the early 90's.
A Taco Bell now stands on that hallowed ground of Fat Mike's. While I love Taco Bell NOTHING will ever replace FAT MIKE'S.
Believe me, as a hot dog lover, I have never been satisfied since Fatso left this area.

I thought Fat Mikes was great as well,I think they sold to Cubby's
    in the 90's,then Cubby's sold to Callaghan's,same building on 17 south,Hasbrouck Heights,NJ,not to far from Hanks's Frank's on 46 east.

Yes, I fondly remember Fat Mike's on 17. Many of the people I grew up with in Fair Lawn went there. We miss it. Johnny & Hanges moved from Paterson to Fair Lawn (Maple Ave off of 208). Anyone remember that one?

I remember going to Fat Mike's with my pop. If it's the place that had all autographed pictures of celebrity's on the wall. I could remember one of WABC Radio DJ Dan Ingram(I believe). My dad told me they had the best hot dogs around and he was correct. This is going back quite a few years and I remember we had a good time of sharing some dogs. Tell you the truth; 17 south was loaded back in the 70's and 80's with a lot of food places. Even the Paramus Park Mall had a food court that was worth talking about back then...

FAT MIKE'S was the BEST hot dog stand EVER! I have searched high and low since it closed looking for a chili dog to rival Fat Mike's. Anybody remember the newspaper article hanging on the wall featuring Fat Mike driving a Rolls Royce at his beach house in Florida because of the $$$ he made from that stand on 17? The chili Dogs were the best - washed down with the birch beer. Just saw a documentary on PBS about hot dog stands across the US - just made me long for Fat Mike's. I wish I had that chili recipe! Anyone?

I believe that the progression was Fat Mike's - to Texas Wieners (Home of the Texas Lunch) - to Cubby's - to Callahan's - to...as of this week...an empty building.

Fondly remember Fat Mikes, I even remember it as far back as when Rt. 17 was only a two lane highway. The original stand was right next to the Hasbrook Heights football field. It was rather small.
They had a woman who worked there who used to yell out orders from the counter- Burgerrrrrrs. Great memories.

For anyone who cares, I believe the original Fat Mike's location was actually where the KFC or Taco Bell is situated. The Callahan's / Cubby's location is where the Dairy Queen was before they left due to not being able to renew the lease for the land.

Fat Mike's was also famed for it's hamburgers called "garbage can lids". More important, I need help. I need to hear from someone who knew that area of 17 during the 70s just west of fat Mike's. e-mail me at:  questor1@comcast.net

No, it doesn't really stink.  Only the people who think so stink!

Well, yes, and no. Here's the thing. Winds in the area tend to blow from the west to the east. Therefore, the garbage dumps and the chemical plants are all in the easternmost part of the state, with the New Jersey Turnpike being a sort of dividing line. So, people who take the Turnpike through the state see all the "stinky" parts, and the winds blow all the smell into New York City rather than into New Jersey.

Or, you can look at it another way: the reason why New Jersey has all the garbage and New York has all the lawyers is because New Jersey got first choice....

Now, as for Fat Mike's, I remember Route 17 when it was filled with traffic lights; the only landmark I still recognize is Dyke's Lumber. Still, I only ate at Fat Mike's a few times, and found it very good, but not much better than others of its type. Still, others of its type are rapidly going out of business...

Yep Jersey stinks all right.  Just like people from South Sarolina are all a bunch of inbred racist hicks who have the IQs of washing machines.... thanks for playing.

Fat Mike's was the best.  I used to hit it lunch time during high school.  Chili cheese dogs were awesome.  And they had these pathetic cow's head stickers on the inside of the windows.... looking forlornly at you while you chowed down on a steak sandwich or burger.

Yea loved Fat Mikes. I grew up in Hasbrouck Heights and remember the shack on the corner of the football field on route 17. If I remember the place it was known more for the steak sandwich rather then hotdogs but i do have senior moments. We were lucky as kids we could walk to Fat Mikes although after they moved my Father became feriends with Mike and when he passed my Dad said the son taking it over it just was not the same. When walking to Eclipse lanes we also had what I think was called Jif Jiffys   cheap burgers and we became teenagers the cliffs behind the lanes were said to be haunted but made a great lovers Lane. Ah memories
