"Anything for Thanksgiving?"

I remember when I was young, Halloween Trick-or-Treat was not yet a big thing, but on Thanksgiving morning (before the Macy's parade, and probably to get us out of our mother's hair while she was cooking), we used to go to neighbors' homes and knock on door and say "Anything for Thanksgiving?" and get a treat. There is a similar custom aroung Christmas in England.

Does anyone rememeber this? We did it in Brooklyn, NY, of all places!

Sounds neat NYNM. I think I will restart that tradetion in my neighborhood. Those grandzillas do get under foot!

What a great thing to do. I've never heard of this, but it sounds like fun to me.

Sounds like a way for the marketing folks to stretch that Holiday Shopping season even longer !!! Wear a Santa Suit when you "Trick or Treat" in November and kill three (3) Birds with one stone!

Seriously,I must admit I have never heard of an exchange at Thanksgiving, but it sounds like a good thing to do.

I pitched my 9 yr, old grandaughter w/ the idea last night. She just said "your weird PapaJoe". Oh well.

But I like the 3-in-one idea: Santa Suit for trick or treat on Thanksgiving. Maybe go with your lover and wear a shamrock too (carry some eggs? a flag? etc.)

I know it was tradition for my older cousins on Staten Island and some friends mention it who grew up in Jersey City. My Mother tells me no for Bayonne...but maybe no for her as she was not allowed to partcipate. One JC friend said they dressed like a  hobo and  the line was "anything for the poor?" but she may have just been being fresh.

Interesting you mention the Macy's parade because R H Macy is one of a very few that are responsible for creating the commercial sales season of Christmas as it is conducted in the US since the early 1900s. December used to be the slowest sales motnh of the year so R H decided to create the Turkey Day Parade with its last float being the old man in the red suit who then became ther in store figure children would tell what they wanted for December 25th. Macy along with Coca Cola and the greeting card industry were the pioneers, then all other segments of capitalism-wholesale, retail, service, entertainment et al followed suit
 
I'll take the green, eco friendly, completely organic Tournament of Roses Parade any day over the Macy parade, since day one over a hundred years ago the Rose Parade has been organic

No, never  did anything for Thanksgiving.
 
Where's NYNM been?

One year whne we were in high school, we went Christmas caroling - sang Christmas carols or "I have a little dreidel" depending on the family, told them we were from St. Theresa's (we did all belong to that parish), the folks gave us money, and we went and bought a case of beer. I'm so ashamed

Canada has a Thanksgiving Day every year in October, other nations have a Thanksgiving Day as well. Many cultures have a religious centered day of giving thanks around the world
