Nothing beats the apple cider donuts in autumn. I love to hit Linvilla Orchards in Media, Pa and get those warm cider donuts on the weekend. Are these found everywhere or just a east coast thing?

I love the fresh cider donuts at Russell Orchards near Crane's Beach in Ipswich, Mass.
http://www.russellorchardsma.com/bakeryandstore.php

I haven't seen them very many other places around here - but I'm sure they're around!
[But this is the east still... I grew up in CA and never saw them there... hmmmm. any native Washigtnon staters??]

Sutton's Marketplace in the Lake George NY area has great cider donuts. Rachael Ray even showed them on $40 a day. I miss upstate NY this time of year. I live in FL now and it doesn't feel like fall. I can't find cider donuts anywhere down here. Oh, there was also a roadside place on LI towards the hamptons that had great cider donuts. You can watch them make them.

Milburn's Orchard in Cecil County, Maryland, which is where Maryland meets Pennslyvania and Delaware, has great cider donuts.
Fresh baked on site and made from the orchard's bounty.

The cider is pretty good as well...well, it is as good as pasturerized cider can be. But I have never been able to find unpasturerized cider in maryland.

One of the things I miss from living in central N.Y. is the apple cider donuts and hot cider especially after haunted hayrides thru the corn stalks and pumpkin patches on a crisp starry October night.

Oh my dear Buffetbuster...come to CT and I'll buy you 1/2 dozen of the best cider donuts you've ever had: Atkins Farms in South Hadley, Mass. makes the tastiest ones around. I've eaten the same from Cold Hollow and many orchards/farm stands around New England, and none compare to Atkins Farms. I'm still searching, though...

I'm with ya, ayersian. Atkins Farms for reals. (Aren't they in Amherst?) The best cider donuts. My pals always always bring a few bags when visiting from the Happy Valley.

I'll bet it's gorgeous in Ayer and Petersham right about now. Hope you are having a lovely autumn.

Entenmann bakery makes cider donuts on a large scale for supermarkets. I bought some and they seemed pretty good as I ate them very quickly. These posts here are making me want to search out some farm or bakery made ones. I do know where I can find them and it's a great day for a Autumn drive, but I don't think I want to drive the 90+ miles to get a bag of donuts.

Not too far from Linvilla is Northbrook Orchardsn near Longwood Gardens. Most if not all of the orchards turned into houses and the original barn burned down a few years ago but, they still crank out great apple cider donuts.

we've been enjoying delicious cider donuts (plain, cinammon, and powdered sugar) from Saunderskill Farms in Accord NY. great baked goods all around there, nice produce and cheeses too. perfect autumn foodstuffs are cider donuts. my daughter tries to get me to stop there for donuts everyday on the way to school. and sometimes she wins... www.saunderskill.com . enjoy- fb

Moriello's and Jenkins/Leuken's farm stands have very nice cider donuts, and sometimes hot cider (always in Xmas season when selling trees) here in New Paltz. I dont know how long those cider donuts have been available here- I dont remember them as a child. In fact, I think i first saw them here about 25 years ago...

Cheers, John

It may be just a case of nostalgia for starving college days, but I wouldn't think of eating a cider doughnut from anyplace but Atkins.

Hey cecif, that's what I get for working in MA but living in CT! Okay, if you're gonna twist my arm, we'll bring you some Atkins Farms donuts when we see you in Boston -- believe me, the Atkins diet is the BEST diet (that isn't their slogan but it should be)!

Actually, Rice Farm Stand on my way to work in Wilbraham has really tasty cider donuts, too...but I may have to stop in tomorrow to make sure they're still as delish as usual!

I wonder if they have these at Apple Holler in Sturtevant, WI? They do have one of the better buffets I've eaten, most of it apple stuff of all sorts.

As a New England born Oklahoma transplant (via the west coast)--,I can only say that this forum is reminding me that i really should try to get back to see the family in the fall!--but it never seems to work out. Oh well,--Take a ride through the color to an orchard and enjoy a glass of cider and a donut for me!

Hey tiki... next time come back in the fall and enjoy the color and eat cider donuts and be here for the Sox Victory Parade! (I was there today, which might induce a bit of jealousy I'm guessing...)

Chris, we could meet up after each visiting our cider donut suppliers and do a taste test!!!! And then have lunch... oooh ooh let's plan it here so buffetbuster gets so psyched he buys a plane ticket!!!

Ceci, I bought a bag of 6 cinnamon-sugar cider donuts from Rice Fruit Farm in Wilbraham today -- still delicious as usual. They also had pumpkin donuts, and it seemed like the bakers made a boo-boo (in my favor) with the first beauty I chose: the cake was marbled with pumpkin batter but clearly a regular cider donut, and I didn't realize this until I was halfway through. I ate two more but couldn't find another "fluke"...

I may only eat one donut a year -- it is likely to be a cider donut from ATKIN'S in South Amherst (I think, rather than South Hadley, MA) as someone indicated above.

The only place I have encountered apple cider donuts is at the Julian Pie Company. Picking up donuts and a bag of apple memories (basically cinnamon sugar on pie dough, cut in shapes) is now a required stop when we make the trip to Santa Ysabel to get pies there and bread from Dudley's.

Definitely South Amherst. West Street/Rt. 116 at the corner of Bay Road, (and across Bay Road from Hampshire College). Some of their orchards are actually adjacent to campus (but as college kids, how were we to know that?).

We have an awful of apples grown here (N.E. Tenn) and even have a pretty big Apple festival in Erwin, TN but I don't think I've ever seen an apple cider donut around here and I would love to try a few. The big thing here is apple butter which is made in massive quantities this time of year.

Tiki,
I'm pretty sure Julian remained unscathed this time. They were in the evacuation zone though. Dudley's Bakery reports only minor wind and sand damage. They reopend on 10/27 after completing those repairs.

Glad to hear it!! I lived --or should i say "existed"--in La Jolla when my wife went to grad school at UCSD and was NOT enamored with the city ---BUT LOVED to run up to Julian!!! My son and i camped in the hills around there quite a bit and always stopped by the bakery on the way in and for pie on the way out!

I visited Russell Orchards today... had a fresh off the donut machine cider donut... YUM! Russell's cider donuts are lovely and moist and not too cakey and they have this bit of tingly-crispy-ness almost on the outside, from the oil I suspect. I couldn't wait for a photo (camera in car) to take a couple bites - after all it was hot!!! (Yummy hot cider too & a half gallon to take home.)

Here's my goods out in front of the barn (retail area).

It occurs to me I can't compare with Cold Hollow Cider Mill because I never stopped there (isn't it touristy?)... in fact I have very few other cider donut experiences for comparison! LOL!

Thanks to Waltpiii above, I've found my new favorite cider donut at Applebrook Farms in Broad Brook, CT. It is simply and utterly amazing. They do not make the donuts there (because of state law forbidding that size of kitchen), but they give the ingredients to Donut Dip in Springfield, MA and then pick them up fresh on the weekends. I made a stop at the Donut Dip in East Longmeadow, MA yesterday and will be reviewing it for the site asap. I got a dozen assorted, including two cider donuts -- and they are indeed the same. I actually like the taste of them in the Applebrook parking lot best, though...the ambiance, ya know.

I have to agree with Frank...

"...Saunderskill Farms in Accord NY. great baked goods all around there, nice produce and cheeses too. perfect autumn foodstuffs are cider donuts. www.saunderskill.com "

I am now in Ecuador in South America and was pining for Saunderskill cider doughnuts which drove me online to see if I could figure out how to make my own and came across this forum. Haven't had one in over 5 years now, but can't forget them.

Donut Dip is quite good and makes visiting my in laws in Springfield almost bearable. (just kidding...they are great people!)

I recently stopped at Neil's in Wallingford, CT for the first time and had the best Cider Donut I ever had. Not sure if they have them all year...but WOW! it was outstanding.

I am so lucky. I can buy Cold Hollow Cider in our supermarket here in Burlington, VT. But it is sure worth the half hour drive to get the donuts. Somehow we always find ourselves at the Ben and Jerry's plant ( 10 minutes away) as well! Hey maybe I ought to suggest they try a new flavor ! Cider Donut Ice Cream !

Mark I can only hope that you are not joking and do plan to exhort Messrs. Ben and Jerry to provide the populace with that flavor. I can see the side of the carton right not: apple cider ice cream with chunks of apple and pieces of cider donuts.

I'm going to go lay down with a cool cloth over my eyes.

Well, as a NJ-er, I expected to see Delicious Orchards noted, but, for me (with a touch of demophobia), I prefer the much more downscale pair of orchards outside of Freehold (west of town, on old Route 33 [Business]) - Wemrock Orchards and Battleview Orchards. (More or less cross-road rivals, a result of a family feud of sorts, IIRC).

Easy parking, quick in-and-out, no "amusement park" sized crowds, or long treks through the Mercedes and Lexus filled parking lot to get in. (Oh, yeah, and on my way home <g>).

I was a bit shocked at my first re-visit to Delicious back in the 90's after not having been there since the late 1970's- Battleground and Wemrock still have a "local" and true "retro" feel, as if time (like Route 33) have somewhat passed them by...

I grew up in Monmouth Cnty, NJ and going to Delicious Orchards was something we did all the time. Since it has become a huge tourist place it is a zoo, but I have to say the quality is still there. The Cide donuts are still awesome, along with the pies and cheeses. I remember when they would give away the donuts and cider while you shopped. I would still go, but not on the weekend when most of the licence plates are from out of state. The other two Orchards mentioned are both really goos also, especially for pies and crumb cakes.

There used to be a place called Scumpy's in Somerset Cnty that we would also go to but I don't know if they are still open.

I stopped at Donut Dip in West Springfield, MA this morning for my apple cider donut fix.  The apple cider donuts were mighty fine.  But while I was there, I heard a cheese danish call my name.  It was the best cheese danish that I have ever had.  The next time I will try for photos.

Walt, you got that right.  You know there's a Donut Dip closer to you in East Longmeadow, easy in, easy out.  Gotta love those folks from Broad Brook Farm!    Chris

Cheese danish you say?? I will have to get past the cider and buttermilk donuts and try a danish. My wife is up there this week visiting family...I'll have to have her bring me a care package!

Thanks for the tip!

Orondo Cider Works north of Wenatchee, WA makes wonderful cider donuts.

I'm kind of glad they're not closer, it's about a 40  minute drive from me.

I can't wait til Carter Mountain Orchard in Charlottesville reopens April 15.  They have the best cider donuts I have ever tasted - much lighter than most I have tried, and they come hot out of the oven.

Cold they are very good but warm they are delectable.

I was able to freeze some I took home, and heated them in the oven on low heat for 10-15 minutes , wrapped in foil.  They were nearly as good as fresh that way.

Yes, I know that East Longmeadow is closer but I had to be in West Springfield to have my car serviced.

We have apple cider doughnuts here in the Midwest too. The best I've ever had are from Edwards Apple Orchard near Poplar Grove, IL where I grew up. They roll them in sugar and when you can get them warm with a glass of cider they are just divine... I can't wait until fall so I can go out and get some!
