Apple pie and cheese

Mrs OC thinks I am nuts, but when she makes one of her delicious apple pies with the lard in the crust and the whole 9 yards, I love to eat it with a nice chunk of good sharp cheddar cheese.

That's not nuts to me. When I was a kid, we always had cheese on apple pie. Also, my mother made an apple pie that had shredded cheddar baked into the crust.

I remember my father saying, "apple pie without cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze".

Does it have to be a certain type of apple pie to have cheese on it? Does dutch apple qualify?

I seem to recall seeing that on restaurant menu's many years ago. Think they would melt a slice right on top of the pie. It's not bad but I would normally prefer vanilla ice cream.

I've had Cheese on my apple pie maybe 3-4 times in my lifetime. Thought the taste was unusual but OK. I think the key would be good quaility sharp cheddar.

How about both??? . I just made a home made pie with lattice work top and I brushed syrup and brown sugar on the lattice and it sure did brown pretty. I used Granny Smith apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, a little lime juic and a little salt, some water and some flour. It came out very pretty and crispy. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

With apple pie, I will melt the sharp cheese on top in the microwave, the I will a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The mixture of the sharp chesse, with tartness of the apples and sweetness of the ice cream is amazing. Walt

I'm a fan also. The sharper the cheese the better! There was a taco place when I was a kid that would fill a tortilla with apple pie filling and nacho cheese, they called it an Apple Gomez. I loved those things.

I've never had this combination, but LOVE Stilton with pears or apples. I guess it would work.

chewingthefat I like American cheese on Apple Pie. I'm pretty sure that was what was served in most of the Diners and Cafe's when I was coming up. I honestly don't know if I heard of Cheddar until I was grown.
