That little lady has talents far beyond the ability to twirl on some ice skates.

Priceless!! I printed that and put it up on the wall at work for the days when I'm bored and need amusement. Applebee's may or may not be lowbrow, but I have never, ever had a good meal in one, ever! And I've had free meals there after my family would buy me a gift card for Christmas. Everything tastes overcooked and warmed over as though it had been sitting in under a heat lamp for a while. I had a horrible pasta bowl that was mushy. How hard is it to cook pasta?

In the Business section of today's newspaper, there was an article that reported a chain-wide drop in sales & profits of 3% for the past 30 days at Applebee's. Gee--if things keep going at that rate, then eventually there might not be a "fancy restaurant" like Applebee's for the likes of Tonya Harding!

IHOP to buy Applebee’s in $2.1 billion deal
                    The Associated Press
GLENDALE, Calif. | IHOP Corp., best known for its chain of blue-roofed pancake restaurants, today said it has agreed to buy the Overland Park-based Applebee’s International Inc. for about $1.9 billion in cash.

The move comes as Wall Street analysts are expecting a difficult second-quarter earnings season in the restaurant sector as soaring commodity costs are hurting restaurant profits and consumers facing high gas prices are thinking twice about going out for a meal.
                    ...........

.........IHOP said it would franchise out most of Applebee’s 500 company-owned stores. Applebee’s has 1,943 restaurants overall worldwide, including those operated by franchisees.

But same-store sales are down more sharply this year for Applebee’s company-owned restaurants than for its franchise locations.

Virtually all of IHOP’s 1,319 restaurants are now owned by franchisees.

In April, Applebee’s struck a deal with Richard Breeden, an investor and former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to add him and one other person to its board, amid pressure from Breeden’s firm to improve operations.

“We look forward to applying the same focus and discipline to Applebee’s that we have employed at IHOP over the last several years,” said IHOP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Julia Stewart. “We have successfully restructured our own company, and in the process, re-energized our brand, improved our operational performance and maximized the development of franchise restaurants.”
                    cont.....

".......The restaurant sector was expecting hard times, according to analysts.

As consumers worry about a soft housing market and rising gas prices, they are less willing to pay for a night out, analysts say. Meanwhile, the cost of everything from milk to beef steadily climbed.

Labor costs also will be taking their toll on restaurant businesses as minimum wage hikes take effect in a number of states and at the federal level."

As kids,we never had that problem. We ate mostly at home.We used to drive from San Antonio out to Bandera to one of the creeks in the area and splash around and eat a picnic lunch.Or my dad would drive to Blanco to the state park there. He and my brother would fish in the Blanco River, and us girls,(my mom, sister and I) would walk around looking at wild flowers and such.We would eat lunch there, and that evening go home and eat the fish my dad and brother caught. We ate sunfish and perch and have veggies and stuff with it.
When we lived in Alaska we would go to Green Lake and pick wild berries and run around and play. For birthdays or other special occassions we'd eat at Nikko Gardens in Anchorage,a japanese restaurant. To make a long story short,we kids, since my dad was military, were exposed to different cultures and food, even if the on;y forgein place we lived was Okinawa. Our parents read to us as kids, and we were always going to the library. They discussed current events and history with us. I recall my dad visiting my brother and sister at school, and giving talks about North Africa and WW2 and Okinawa when we were kids.We always went on drives to little towns and in evenings ,looking for wildlife like deers and rabbits.
Whatever my parents faults, they loved us and tried to expose us to a broader view of the world and it's peoples.Very few children today are lucky to have parents like mine,God rest their souls.
The town I live in Schertz,is listed as one of the best places to live in Texas.Yet much of the charm to me is disappearing. You could drive out in the area around town and see deer and other wildlife,
but with the constant building of houses, they are driving the wildlife out.The big box stores continue to come.Have SuperWalmart and now Lowe's coming in, with the massive traffic jams on FM3009 and I-35North due to constant commercial building.Used to be only Schertz Bank and Trust in town. Now We have Bank of America,Capital One,Chase,Washington Mutual, plus two local San Antonio credit unions,Randolph-Brooks,and Security Service, both started by local military personnel.
Yes we have the chains, but there are some local places that are pretty good.
Cibolo which is two miles from here is experiencing growth, but at a slower place. I've been to the three local restaurants there and enjoyed them.
It's sad to think that this will just be a mass of homes and businesses from San Antonio to Austin which may happend before I die.
new Braunfels, still has it's charm and while they have Walmart, etc.
Main Street is still the same and there are local places to eat and shop.
The problem is these places rated books give people the idea that Schertz or new Braunfels is a great place to live,so people move here. And at the same time, these new comers without meaning to destroy the very things that make some of these towns such nice places.

People would move to the exurbs, whether they are outside of San Antonio or Baltimore, regardless of whether or not magazines put out lists of best towns. Those lists are just reflecting society; they are not driving society.

Anyway....IHOP and Applebees? This is like when two ugly people get married. Maybe the kids will be good looking, but I doubt it.

Speaking of ugly kids,The new IHOP at Nacodoches Road and loop1604 next to Rolling Oaks Mall is open.
The one in the Olympia Forum gets so much business, guess IHOP decided they needed another one.I'm sure they will put an Applebee's
out here in Schertz some time in the future. The nearest on is in Windcrest on the I-35N access road.

I have eaten at that one twice, and my food was good.I have no complaints about that particular one.But i do understand what you all are saying.
And yes as someone earlier said, not every local place is great food, and in some towns, places like Applebee's does give them a little better place to go to eat for a special occassion if they have to drive long distances to eat at better restaurants.

Maybe a selection of syrups would make Applebee's food palatable.

IMO this is just another symptom of the economy. When things are going well corporations that own chains want every opportunity to capture the profit, and buy (frequently force) out the franchisees. When it's lousy, they sell off to franchisees who take most of the risk.

Up to yesterday, I'd have to agree. My brother had said it is getting better. (In my town Applebees lives on the overflow of a better place next door). We tried it yesterday, and I hate to admit that it has gotten much better. For what we paid, vs what we got, I'd have to rate it well, well above average. I'll no longer avoid it, and expect that I will return within the next month. The joke of putting a "c" before the "a" in Applebees is too good to forget, but it is , IMO, no longer accurate.
