AM stations lost favor when FM came out because the music could be broadcasted in stereo while AM is only audio (non stereo)
however they can produce an AM stereo signal now, but most AM radios are still (non stereo).
Actually AM Stereo has been around for quite awhile as far back as the early 80's that I can remember. Back then some AM stations who were in stereo had made a very BIG deal about it such as Buffalo's WKBW-AM 1520 with their jingles such as "....KB STEREO 15...W K B W " and " At Stereo 1520 on your Buffalo AM dial this is W K B W"
Others meanwhile not so much such as in NYC the old 66 WNBC-AM was in stereo as well but WNBC didn't promote it. I guess Don Imus at the time had said it best when a listener had called up WNBC back around 1982 or so and asked about them being in stereo. I can recall Don asking the listener if he had an AM Stereo set only for the listener to say no. In Imus fashion "...then why do YOU care if WNBC is in stereo ?? We are in stereo but since nobody has an AM stereo set..well its NBC's money not mine".
