Argentine Grill - Pecos, NM (!!) Sat, 07/7/07 10:32 PM (permalink)
Yesterday I passed a REAL road food place just off Rt. 50 heading into Pecos, NM.

Now Pecos, just on the other side of the Sangre de Christos mountains from Santa Fe is a sort of redneck-ish area not the "sophistication" of SF. So I pass this plyboard sign that says: Argentine Grill - Fri Sat Sun and decide to go back today (Sat)

Yup, it's open, with a few beat up cars outside, smoke coming out of the makeshift grill and about 10 beautiful chickens split up and roasting. And a hispanic guy with a gaucho hat turning some ribs.

So I say "I'd like some chicken" and he says "I don't have any chicken", which is wierd. Then he takes a knife and cuts off a small priece of the chicken to give me a taste. Then I said again I'd like some chicken please and he says again I dont have any.
Then he points to a few small groups of people walking around the property indicating that they ahve already claimed the chicken. He says they have been waiting 1/2 hr. So then he says Leave and come back later. One hour.

So I just order the ribs, which are "there". Good stuff: He takes out some huge rolls, puts the ribs in it and covers it with a spicy vinegar-ish sauce and these chopped up veggies (tomatoes, avocado, onion and fresh jalepenos.)

Well that was a treat!!! A small newspaper article said the guy just moved from Argentina and had a grill there.

Has anyone heard of this stuff? Apparently they also serve sausage and carne asado (but you probably have to go away and come back 2 hrs. later...)

So he really meant to say he was currently out of chicken. Sounds like some good food.
