Around North-Central PA (Wellsboro)

Hi Folks, My wife and I will be traveling to Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon this week to get our yearly foliage fix. Can anyone recommend any restaurants or other eateries in, near (w/in 45 minutes or so), or on the way to Wellsboro, PA? We will be driving from the Philadelphia area north on Route 476 and then west on Route 80 to Lock Haven. Local roads from there. We're willing to travel for good food so if you have a place that you love, please share it with us! Thanks in advance, Chumley

Hi-- The Wellsboro Diner is a classic and you definitely need to stop there. You can't miss it--it's on the main drag and is like something out of the 50's. I remember the food there being pretty good, too, though we usually just had breakfast there so I can't speak for lunch or dinner... Lovely country up there and a great time of year to be there. Enjoy.

My wife saw their website yesterday and put it on our list of places to try as it sounded terrific! But it's always great to get actual confirmation from other Roadfooders. This will be our first time in the area and we are looking forward to it. Thanks for your good wishes.

Check out the Permastone Inn near Coudersport or the Fin, Fur, and Feather west of Wellsboro. If you want some good hotdogs (or a late night de-tox) the Texas Lunch in Lock Haven on Main St. is a 40 year old institution.

Hi Chumley-- Reading Oneiron's post reminded me of another place--on Route 6 near Coudersport is an amusing place called Potato City Inn. It's quite the potato growing area up there in the northern tier of PA. Anyway, we stopped there once and I remembered the french fries being great!

Tom's Kitchen---Route 93 in Conyngham is close to the 80/81 junction and serves nice home-cooked meals from breakfast to supper. The daily dinners...Meatloaf, Roast Turkey...are all very good too. Bullfrog Brewery---229 W. Fourth St. in Williamsport, brews very good beer! Great pub food too, including my favorite wings ever, the "After Shock" (teryikaki based...hot and sweet at the same time).

I went to college in Mansfield (15 miles from Wellsboro) in the late 80's, and there was a wonderful restaurant in town called Mark's Brothers. You dine in the front room parlors of a plain porched country home a few blocks from campus on Main Street. A full bar-with a much more raucous atmosphere during weekends-was also available for students and thirsty tourists just down the hallway. Mark's Brothers: it had homemade everything...great soup, cold chicken sandwiches with white and dark roast chicken pulled from the bone and piled high on white bread with lettuce and tomato, amazing entrees. You must try the Cheese Pie if they still offer it. I still think about that pie. It is rich and flavorful, with the texture of a brick of real cream cheese. And the butter and graham based crust is in a whole different class than any I have ever sampled. They also have cheesecake; but you want the cheese pie! I used to love the Grand Canyon...beautiful foliage and hiking. Wellsboro and Mansfield are classic old town experiences, for sure! Do you go to the Penn-Wells hotel in Wellsboro for their famous buffets or stay in their old fashioned and tasteful hotel rooms? Ever been to the truly unique AnimalLand? Thanks for the memories!

Fry's Turkey Ranch is a restaurant on the southbound side of Route 15, about 20 miles north of Williamsport, or 27 miles south of Mansfield. It is located on Steam Valley Mountain, and has been there since the 1930's. Inside is bright and sunny with large picture windows. The interior is decorated with various stuffed animal trophies. Needless to say, the dish to eat there is turkey. We recommend the various turkey dinners and sandwiches, which are made with fresh turkey and served with lots of gravy (if you wish), mashed potatoes and gravy. The prices are very reasonable, bordering on cheap.

We had most of our meals at the Wellsboro Diner, which we love dearly. There was also a good hamburger place about a block away but other than those two restaurants, we didn't eat out too much. We have been back since then but we didn't try out any new places. Looking forward to trying some of the places that have been recommended since we took our trip. Welcome to Roadfood, pacman and keswab. You're going to love it!

Do you have the name of the hamburger place near the diner? I get to Wellsboro sevral times a year and would like to try somewhere besides the Diner.

The Pioneer. They have a pretty good burger. Their "Big Mac" version is the Pioneer Burger. Native Bagel around the corner from the courthouse is pretty good. The candy store is great.

Yep, that's it -- The Pioneer. Thanks for jogging my memory. The food I remember well. Sometimes the names get lost.
