I think we talked about this somewhere on this board, or maybe I just read it somewhere, but it is my understanding that what really did in AT was the rise in Cod prices in the 80's, a result of overfishing, disease and the Cod Wars.

What really did in Arthur Treacher's was the purchase by Mrs paul's. They gutted the managment, and cut the ingredient quality. In addition, the Mrs Pauls managment had no restaurant experience.

Those who still have AT in their area, do they really still sell the Crunch Pup? We have AT as an afterthought in some Nathan's restaurants here in NJ, but none of them sell the crunch pup...Oh man what I wouldn't do for a crunch pup right now....

I recall growing up in St. Louis we had AT & Long John SIlvers about the same time vying for the Fish & Chips first place. I prefered LJS as i recollect because they had the little pieces of batter under the fish. I believe they sold it as side dish they were so popular. At any rate, AT disappeared one day and LJS was the only one standing. Since I've been in FL I've seen 2 LJS. Is fish a dying breed? bkk

Here in NE Ohio, we have an abundance of Arthur Treacher's - the chain was once headquartered in Youngstown.

It's certainly nothing to rave about and I rarely go there but it can be a guilty pleasure food once in awhile. And yes, they do serve crunch pups, at least in this region. They send out coupons quite frequently here and a 99 cent crunch pup or slice of lemon pie is always on there.

I used to go to the one on Market Street by the old Boardman High School with my cousin. I liked the lemon pie and if the fish didn't taste so good, I'd just dump malt vinegar all over it. Alas, there are no AT's here in the Northwest, at least none I've seen. Skipper's is the fast food equivalent here.

I LOVED Arthur Treacher's as a kid. It made my really want to eat fish. Phildelmar is right - Mrs. Paul's buying the company did it in. They replaced the cod fish with pollack and it all went to hell.

We had an AT in our local mall (SW PA). I remember the booths being really tall and their chicken was the best.

It didn't last long.

What did them in was the acquisition by Mrs Pauls, and the subsequent gutting of the senior managment staff, who were then replaced by Mrs Pauls executives, who knew nothing of the restaurant business. The quality of the ingredients was also reduced.

My mom would take me to the one in Margate, FL in the mid to late 70's. I didn't eat the fish, but the battered chicken and hush puppies were great.

There was one in suburban Chicago (Niles or Morton Grove). On Harlem Ave. The only one in Chicago as far as I know.

There was an Arthur Treacher's located on Street Road in Bensalem,PA. Before it was an Arthur Treacher's it was a Burger Chef. Treacher's didn't last long there. Now it is a pizza place.

My wife says there was another one in the Chicago subburbs. Hub's on Dempster Avenue in Skokie used to be an AT.

Two AT locations that I know of in Chicago are were

Park Ridge - on Greenwood Ave, just south of Dempster
Chicago - on Milwaukee ave., somewhere between Montrose and Belmont

Also, the last AT I remember seeing was in an airport about 2 years ago, my memory is that it was in Atlanta.
