As One Get Older

I'll be 60 this year and I have noticed that my sense of taste is going out the window. Also texture, and mouth feel, certain foods just are not the same in my mouth. This really sucks and I was just wondering anyone else experience this?

    Nope. I had a can of Campbell's spaghetti (it was Franco American till we switched to Freedom Fries) last week and it tasted just the way it did when I was 8.

    Was it spaghetti or Spaghetti'Os?  I haven't found the regular spaghetti in a long while.
    When I was a kid I thought that is what real Italian food tasted like, just as I thought Chun King was real Chinese.

    No, my taste seems the same as when I was much younger. I'm a year younger than you, fish taco. On the other hand, my hearing sucks and my eyesight too. But I'm OK with not hearing my food so well!
     
    PS----I can still hear Rice Krispies and chicharrons crackle just fine!

    It was spaghetti. I always see the Spaghetti'Os, but I see the spaghetti only every once in a while.

    Ah, the memories of canned bean sprouts. I still remember those two cans taped together for a "more authentic" Chinese flavor!

    Jeez.........Chun King is NOT real Chinese.......and most of the packets of soy sauce you get are made by a cple of Jewish brothers in NJ and contain not a drop of soy, only corn syrup.
     
    Next thing you know, Bay Corn will not be grown anywhere near a bay of water

    I forgot about the taped-together cans. Growing up there were just a few things I knew about Chinese food. Some of it came in cans, some of it came from a restaurant called the Far East, and some of it came from Nickel Charlie's hamburger place downtown. All in all, I preferred the Chinese food at Nickel Charlie's (really Charles Lunch). There was just the one item -- chow mein on a hamburger bun.

    Two years older than you and my only food/age related difference is I now need a 40 mg Prilosec instead of a 20 mg.

    I just turned 66 and have not noticed a difference in physical tastes, only preferences; e.g., presently, I rarely purchase candy bars and I now use more pepper-type heat.  Never did have a taste for smoked fish, probably never will.
     
    And, I second Mar52's comment about Zantac/Prilosec, etc.

    Chowmein on a bun.a staple of SE Mass for many years.....is still a work of art and love.............at least in some places

    One of these days I'm going to have to find a can of chow mein and make myself a chow mein sandwich. At Nickel Charlie's they'd put some of those crispy noodles on first and then add the chow mein. Most of the time I'd get mine without the noodles.

    Michael, one of those grocery store cans won't give you the same essence as a brown-gravy, stir-fried veggies (lots of celery) served on a bun or white bread like you find in Fall River Mass, but it's a start.......and yes, crispy noodles are almost as must. This from a guy who for 30 years resisted putting a "Tomahto" on his BLT.........now I wonder whatever was I thinking!

    Ah, but the chow mein at Nickel Charlie's didn't have any gravy. It was exactly like the gooey stuff from the cans in grocery stores.

    My desire for certain foods changed. I no longer like Italian food. I no longer like Chinese dishes. Cant stand any type of casserole( Bob does, so he is easy to cook for) What I have been doing, lately, is good cheese, bread and sopressata.I have actually lost weight!

    The older I get, I find myself liking more and more different foods!  Just wish that I could have found mountain oysters for the superbowl party on Sunday! (I have eaten and really enjoyed them.)
