Astronaut arrested for Attempted murder

Has anybody else caught up with the tabloid headline of the day. An astronaut confronted her ex-beau's new love at the Orlando airport and has been accused of attempted muder. I wonder how long before this is a Law and Order episode

I suspect the script is already being written.

It has been in the news ALL day. I am beginning to think I know them all personally

The lady sure did flush a great career down the commode.

Roossy: I understood that she used the diapers to keep from making pit stops. Maybe she couldn't hold it.

My understanding is that astronauts use diapers in space.

I figure the Movie plot will include the invasion of her brain by a Roswell-type space creature during her Shuttle Ride, who then begins the destruction of the Human Race by creating and destroying love-triangles in a geometrically expanding program until the Earth has but three people left...and I haven't had the opportunity to meet the other two yet!

... sounds a bit like the movie The Omega man. I've been waiting for a sequel!

You might say so..wearing a diaper (self-installed) and armed with a BB Gun, and a trash bag (among other things), She drove from Houston to Miami to track down her competition in the triangle that apparently was beginning to cut her out of "HIS" future.

I must admit, she elected to go out in a 'Blaze' of Glory. I am waiting for the video of her in the Command Pilots seat on the Shuttle. This is gonna cost NASA a lot to bury!

It's sad to bring all this shame to that great institution.

You are correct. This lady has taken the definition to "New heights"!!

To think that this woman is a Navy Cap't (bird Colonel) and we trusted her with a multi-billion dollar space shuttle. Didn't she have some type of psych profile?

Unbelievable that a person with her training would act so irresponsibly.

According to CNN, the lady was one of 3500 selected that year. I understand they only select 20. She had to go through tremendous psch work to get there.

She had applied four times before being selected and was a test pilot before that.

Something really flipped her out. Perhaps it was stress???

The fact that they do go through such extensive psychological testing before hand is what really baffles me about this story.

I still can't believe that she drove all the way from Houston to Orlando while wearing a diaper, just so she wouldn't have to stop. I can't imagine I will hear a more bizarre news story this year.

Maybe it was the diaper rash that drove her crazy!

It's a government plot to give the press a bizarre story so that they'll stop reporting on the War in Iraq. BB Guns, diapers...this smells like Cheeney for sure. She's merely a pawn in a much bigger scandal.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this myself. First of all I understand that the psych tests are done on admission to the program only (which is I believe 10 yrs. ago for this woman) and are not repeated after that. Also (tho I don't know anything about the NASA evaluation program per se), the point of the eval may be more to test ability to get along with others "in space" (not "on the ground") and overall ability to cope with demands of space flight rather than daily life. It is possible to have "encapsulated" mental problems that may not "directly" affect someone on the job, esp. if they develop after initial screening. There are many situational components here, too, such as marital problems, that did not exist when she was evaluated 10 yrs. ago. Further, you can be "monitored" in some general medical way (as the news is saying) and never get to encapsulated personal problems.
And, no matter what, she is nutz!!!

She made a 900 mile drive and called it so close that she had to wear a diaper to be sure to get to MCO in time ???

A BB gun, a plastic bag, a rubber hose ... doesn't sound like she tricked herself out very well for a pre-meditated murder.

I read an article that said she was a very brilliant person, but couldn't handle simple things like going to the grocery store, or opening a checking account. She had tons of book knowledge, but almost no common sense. I also thought the diaper thing was rather weird. Her trip was 900 miles one-way. What vehicle do you know that can go 900 miles on a tank of gas?? SHe would have had to stop a couple times anyway. Very creepy story.

Hey, I'm a psychologist and my two cents are : Why does everybody think that ANYONE who wants to be an astronaut is sane? It's kinda of like wanting to be president, you have to be nuts to want to do it in the first place. You have to be obessive, overly driven, single minded, willing to take crazy risks, somewhat out of touch with reality, and someone who doesn't value their family their family all that much.

Hmm.....

My disagreement, Frank, is that Ms. Novak acted like a person crazed by love. Both men and women have been unhinged by the overwheliming emotions of attraction and love and acted in stupefying ways.
