Austin BBQ besides Salt Lick Wed, 03/2/11 10:28 PM (permalink)
I've been hearing that the Salt Lick's BBQ isn't as good as some others.  My husband ate there a few years ago and enjoyed it and even brought home their bottled seasonings and sauces.  Going back to San Antonio soon and was hoping to get BBQ.  Is there a better place in either SA or Austin?

There is a LOT of information on the Southern BBQ Trail web site.  Central Texas is my favorite spot for BBQ in this whole country - including Kansas City, Memphis, the Carolinas or anywhere else you can think of.  The key, however, is that to find this great BBQ, one needs to get out of the cities of Austin and San Antonio.  However, BETWEEN Austin and San Antonio (perhaps with a slight detour from a straight line), you will find all kinds of wondrous BBQ stuffs in small towns like Lockhart, Luling, Elgin, and Taylor.

When we were in town with the Roadfood gathering in 2008, I had pretty good food at Iron Works Barbecue. The sausage, beef ribs and potato salad were the best items I had. The building used to be a foundry and gave the restaurant a neat atmosphere.

The best Saltlick is the one out of the city in Driftwood?  You get it fresh off the grill there.  The one in the city is not that good.
