Austin is hotdogless! Tue, 12/2/08 9:11 PM (permalink)
I'm from the upper midwest and know there is nothing better than a good natural casing dog.

There are a few "OK" spots in the Austin TX area but Texans don't seem to be big on hot dogs. I occasionally ship in a box of Usingers from Milwaukee but they are pretty expensive delivered. There is a small place in Round Rock that offers Chicago dogs but pretty mediocre at best.

Any recommendations

Oh I tried this topic a few months ago, since I was going to Austin on a business trip.

I was basically lambasted by the board asking "why in the world would you want a hot dog in Austin, eat the tex mex blah blah" "you dont go to Austin for hot dogs".

Of all places I figured people on this board would understand why we might like to try hot dogs in different places...

The people here were arrogant snobs... and the people from Austin specifically were outrageously pompous.

All in all I could tell they were a little self-conscious because their precious city indeed had nothing to offer.

Needless to say, I never found a place... ended up eating at the Texas Chili Parlor near the capital, and it was great chili.

It may very well be that, good hot dogs are hard to find in Texas. But, on the other hand, it's also true that really good BBQ is hard to find in the upper midwest.

Further to my above post, Central Market stores in Austin sell a good range of natural cased (Sabrett) dogs from NYC. Just make your own.
And, if you ever visit Dallas, try "Wild About Harry's" Knox Street stand selling very good Vienna beef dogs.

Thanks. I'll try Sabretts tomorrow. Been to Wild About Harrys in Dallas. Pretty good.

Yes, hot dog places are hard to find in Austin.. we tried to tell you that... (no harm meant, either)

It's just that their BBQ is SO very good in Austin/Lockhart/Taylor Texas, that it totally overwhelms anything else!

The main Central Market has skinless Sabretts only. No natural casing Sabretts!

If you are ever in the San Antonio area, you might wind your way out to west to Hondo on a Saturday. One of our own Roadfooders here (Arnie in Tx) sets up his cart there most Saturdays. He has genuine CSDs with imported Vienna dogs and buns and sport peppers.

P.S. - I think the good BBQ left Austin a while back.

Bummer! Well, if you drive up to Dallas, bring a cooler with you and you can buy them here and take them back with you. There are other NYC brands of hot dogs and German specialties sold at CM in Dallas as well. Including all the Sabrett condiments such as mustard, sauerkraut and onion sauce. I love their mustard.
Write me if you come to Dallas and I'll steer (sorry about the pun) you to a few other stores that carry some really good (imported from Chicago) Polish specialties.

Right! As Ellen mentioned, there're all in Taylor, and Lockhart, etc.

Seeking out hotdogs wherever you go seems is a very roadfoodish type thing to do. What more iconic roadfood is there? More power to you.

I wouldn't go to Austin for a dog, but I wouldn't go there for TexMex either.

And why go to Austin to eat a Chicago style dog or a NY wiener or a Chicago style dog with Vienna beef chili? Seek out some of the local products. Lots of the smokehouses produce wieners . Kreuz in Lockhart does. I've had very good wieners from Taylor Packing Co. in Taylor. That or when in Rome do as the Romans and get a smoked sausage on a bun with chili. Most of the sausages are natural casing.

I grew up in CTx near Austin but haven't been there much in years so I can't help much on finding some place that serves some of these but you might try Waterloo, Hoovers or try the Bad Dog or Bad Dog with Chili at this place:

                          http://www.theshadygrove.com/

I don't know what they're using for the sausage but a friend there tells me their chili is very good and I plan on checking it out next time I get over there.

I hope this means you won't be returning to Austin.

They're not big on hot dogs over around Houston, either. Does that Specs over there have a deli? The main store downtown Houston carries some Usinger products. I didn't think about this thread so didn't look for wieners but maybe.

Another good Texas made wiener is Shiner Dogs from a place on the east side of Shiner whose name I can't remember. Better than the Taylor wieners.

I've had very good wieners from Taylor Packing Co. in Taylor. That or when in Rome do as the Romans and get a smoked sausage on a bun with chili. Most of the sausages are natural casing.

I've recently tried the Taylor Packing Co. hotdogs, the brand name is "Tip Top". They reminded me of what's call a redhot, they have a bright red color, almost neon. They were good, nice mild flavor and a natural casing. I've only found one HEB in Cedar Park that carries them, Parmer Lane and 1431. Oh, and they were not in the section with all the other hotdogs, they were in the HEB brand prepared foods in the meat department.
