Fresh picked apples available everywhere now.
Which ones are your favorites?
I love the Japanese varieties, Crispin/Mutsu, Fuji.
A fresh picked old fashioned Yellow Delicious is wonderful too.

I am more into apple cider than apples - it will be available the week after next in our neck of the woods!!!!!!!!!!  Fresh from our local apple orchards.  Our favorite is a mix of several different apples - no idea what they are but the cider resulting from them is some of the best I had ever tasted. A & M Farm Orchard in Midland OH is my favorite for cider in SW Ohio and Environs:

For fresh eating, IMO, there is only one apple - Macoun.  Unfortunately they have a short season (Oct - Nov) & don't store well. I've never cared for the sweet apples - Delicious, Fuji, etc., except as part of a crisp.  Paula Reds are are a good early season apple.

I did a double-take at the market yesterday when I saw HONEYCRISP Apples (a favorite of mine) at $3.29 a Pound!!!  I know we had a bad year for fruit locally, and the neighbors Peach Orchard is bare as well, BUT importing Apples at that price makes "An Apple A Day..." as costly as my nornal Lunch !!!

Macouns first and foremost. They are not grown locally, but a fairly good supply is usually available shipped from upper
New York State. Wegman's is where I get them in most cases.
 
Second is Macintosh. I grew up on these apples. They are normally grown locally, but the best come from New York State. I had some summer Macs the other week. They were pretty good, juicy, but just a little too soft for my taste.
 
I also like Red Cortland which are local, and are nice and tart.
 
I don't care for sweet apples. I like my fruit to have a good tang to it.

Jonagolds, Mutsus, Macs and Honeycrisps...

Macoun's are at the top of my list as well and look forward to them in the next couple of weeks.

Beyond that, I like Honeycrisps, Gala & Fuji. Had some Gravenstein from HoneyPot Hill in Stow, MA a couple of weeks ago. They were huge and had a nice sweet/tart balance.

Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Northern/Prairie Spy, and Arkansas Blacks top my list. We grow all but the Honeycrisp, and for the price I mentioned earlier we won't be enjoying them this season.  We used to use Gravensteins in SoCal for a Pie Apple (years ago). We don't see them often in the Ohio Valley.

I went to my local orchard here earlier this week, still a little early for lots of thier varieties but still had some good choices.

I got a mixed 1/2 peck bag and a half gallon of cider.

The cider was still tart little early for super sweet cider yet, and the apples were also too early :-(

I will go back next week and try again and again and again and again :-)

If you love apple cidar and are in the Lancaster Pa area, Kaufmann's is one superior cider!!!!
