BBQ BREAD Fri, 07/14/06 5:09 PM (permalink)
Hey--Did you ever hear of BBQ BREAD?
I was just checking out this forum on BBQ, and noticed some talk about Northern Florida BBQ, which is really more like LA, that is, Lower Alabama. Personally, I'm from Indiana, the heart of pork country, but the best BBQ I ever had was in Cantonment, Florida, or maybe its the northside of Pensacola. Take Hwy 29 South to Hwy 90 (9 Mile Road), Turn east and look for a little roadside restaurant on your left (north side of highway) called Ray Cranford's Restaurant. You pull in this little parking lot, and you can smell the BBQ wafting up from the smoker. They have a loyal lunch following. The best thing they do is called Barbeque Bread. They take thick slice of homemade bread and actually grill it in their homemade barbeque sauce and make a great sandwich out of it, by placing the meat on the bread. If I am within 100 miles of this place, I go out of my way to stop there. It is wonderful, and it is a true roadfood mom & pop restaurant!

Where I am at in S.C., I have seen BBQ Bread on the shelves in the local Wallyworld..
Looks like thick plain bread unsliced to me.
I do remember when still living in Miami, we used to go to a BBQ joint on Bird Road, near SW 87th avenue. Cannot remember the name..
Dont even know if it is still there.
But I remember getting a large chunk of bread that looked like it was on the grill.

Sunbeam(maybe Merita)makes a great thick sliced bread perfect for grilling. Ticks me off because our stores around here consider it "seasonal" and only stock it this time of year. Never heard of putting BBQ sauce on it and grilling. Good ol' garlic butter for me or better yet, let it sit out at room temperature for a bit, smear it with garlic then brush with EVOO and grill is nice also.

Lots of places around here SM Tennessee serve the thick sliced bread with bar-b-cue. I've never seen anyplace put the sauce on it and grill it though. Sounds good! The area you described sounds like Ensley, which is between Cantonment and Pensacola there on HWY 29. I will look for it the next time I am down there visiting my daughter. Thanks for the heads up.

Here in Texas you can buy from ButterKrust what they call Texas Toast which is thick sliced bread
which can be grilled.I think Mrs.Baird's also makes some.Never heard of putting bbq sauce on it
            and grilling it.
