I like the fact that professionals are eligable to enter, so many of these contests are only open to amateur cooks.

Should we get Team Roadfood together?? We'd knock 'em dead!

What a fascinating proposition!!! This may be a stroke of genius llee! Lord knows we've got enough professional and accomplished amateur chefs on board here.

Here is the main drawback: You'd have to rely on a local Roadfood member to provide the smoker, or someone with a large, professional grade, trailer mounted smoker would have to agree to bring one in from out of town.

If you folks can pull this off, I'll provide the Barbecue Sauce!

        Buddy

P.S. If you're serious and can actually make this happen, why stop with the one cookoff? There are hundreds that run year round all over the country.

        B.

This is going to be a event that will happen every year ! The bbq cook-off will take place Oct 1, 2006 in Madera, California at the Madera fairgrounds! We have spent so far $30,000 dollars in California just to promote this event so we are hoping for the best. Really in the world of advertising that dollar amount is nothing it is good people like you and others who read the info and pass it on. Word of mouth is the best advertising you can have ! We participated in this cook off, won 3rd place and a check for $1600. The check will NOT clear and the promoter called us to ask us not to deposit the check. I wonder what the first place winner will do???

The event was fun, 31 teams entered, but it looks like NO monies will be paid. He has yanked his website also. Beware of any events done by "BBQ Special Events".

I'm leaving this thread standing...Even though it somehow got past the "soliciting stuff" criteria last Spring.

If ever there was evidence of the need to screen this junk off the site, this is a prime example.

The concept of a cooking team is great, the logistics of it would be very difficult...but Lisa had a good idea.

The posting of offers like this are very hard to verify until "after the fact". The organizer just has to change his name and fake a location and he can run the same scam all over again.

Participation in this event "for fun" is ok, if you know 'up front' that it is for 'fun' not prize money. The organizer made money on it, you can bet on that. So he basically screwed the workers.

No I don't think we should assist in promoting these events unless they are verified by a recognized source. (My Opinion...Not quoting the Site's Policy)

You would think the fairgrounds would be the one to make sure things are lagit? Looks like it would be bad publicity for them. I would think it was lagit if it was part of a fair.

                        Joe,
Last year here in Louisville we had a custom car show..Lots of TV ads and a bunch of prize money promised etc etc. Since Louisville also is the home of the National Street Rod Association meeting each year, it was easy to consider this one a similiar type of operation. They used the State Fair ground and Exposition Halls for the show...it was a BIG operation...but at the end of the show the promoter told the "winners" that he hadn't cleared enough money to pay any of the prize money (total several hundred thousand dollars). He also bounced the checks that paid the Fair ground Fees . All in All it was a total scam, and the losers had nothing to show for it. The promoter was denied a permit for the same show this year...and screamed discrimination when he was not allowed to rip-off the folks a second time.

This was not a sanctioned event, so we did pay our money and took our chances. This guy was slick tho, he kept calling all of participants every so often to keep the hype going. I told my husband it was a sham, but he wanted to do it anyway. We needed the experience.

Sorry for you checkered past. I was there too and felt like the whole thing was just a mess. A lot of us worked hard and did things by the rules only to see things go in the toilet at the end with Clarence. I have been on the CBBQA forums on and off today. I may try to put a nother comp together in mid 2007 at the fairgrounds working with the companies I already handle the marketing and advertisiign for. The prize money for an event like this should have been in an escrow account prior to even advertising the prizes. I do not know what the whole story is but the rain did not help but I do also think that the 4,000 - 5,000 people that was estimated to attend would not have happened anyway. I hope the check ends up being good for you guys. If not be sure to contact the Madera county DA's office they are really on top of things here and will not look at this very kindly.I had a real pleasure meeting some of you guys that competed and hope to bump inot each other again. Good luck and kepp on Queing.
