I think you need to look at your route again.

There is a Maurice's in the Santee area, just off 95.

Get off on Highway 261 at Manning (not sure of the exit number) and try either McCabes or D & H BBQ. Both are good McCabes is probably better IMHO.

In the southern part of the state, it's all Duke's. There's one in Walterboro and one in Ridgeland, I believe, and they're both good. Very weird but delicious sauce--I guess it's technically mustard-based because it's more yellow than red, but it's really sweet and savory. One of the better sauces in the state, IMHO. Sweatman's (on the main list) is not on 95, but it's probably a 40 minute detour if you want to give it a swing. Note that Sweatman's is only open Fridays and Saturdays.

The amount of advertising Maurice has gone into should warn you off. He's having trouble getting people into his restaurants--for cause--so he's turned into the billboard king.

Just over the SC line a few miles into GA on I-95 is Don's BBQ in Pooler, GA - very good. an easy on/off, about two minutes from the exit ramp.

              Cheers, John

Amen to Don's; Lexington Style BBQ. Order a small sliced sandwich with slaw and wash it down with sweet tea. The small sandwich will allow you to order a 2nd sandwich when you're done with the first one. (I can't eat 2 large sandwiches anymore.) The fries are frozen krinkle cuts but are always served crispy and hot right out of the fryer. Around holidays, Dons sometimes closes so call ahead.

I was not aware that the two Duke's were related. The Ridgeland Duke's is only about 2-3 miles off I-95 on Rt. 278 South. Traditionally, this is a catering business and as such is only open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, but they have recently been sprucing the place up so who knows.

Duke's is an all-you-can-eat buffet with plenty of choices (ribs only at night), lots of great sides, excellent fried chicken, good BBQ, the best hush puppies and home cut chips, banana pudding, sweet tea, a loaf of white bread on the table. But don't look for ambiance -- this is bib-overalls and paper plates all the way (the curtains are hung on a piggin string).

I think it's a barbecue cousins thing, as is so common around here, you know?
