Well, for one thing the Sterns have given them some publicity in prior years. They are also very convenient to the Interstate in an area that lots of people travel past. the name is catchy, too.

They are pretty lucky, if you ask me." />

I find it so interesting that others have commented on those miserable people at the counter and the uncleanliness..Obviously, not much has changed. I commented on chowhound.com that the women at the counter made you feel like they were doing you a favor allowing you to eat there! I had plenty of arguments on this place with chowhounders..Just like with Lady and Sons. This is a good update for others.

I hope Choo Choos turns out to be good and I can give a very positive report. I'll be there either October 1 or October 5. Maybe I can finally get some pictures taken.

I take offense to that

New Yorkers are not rude- they are blunt and to the point and honest-and in a hurry- but from my experiences are some of the friendliest, warmest people in the country....

I lived in Seattle for over 3 years, yes, they were the most polite people you will ever want to meet, but I have never met such cold, unfriendly, distant and aloof people ever. I still have nightmre about it over 12 years after leaving.

edit...

Oh and I forgot personable- New Yorkers are very personable
Although I still think the most personable people I ever met are the folks from Pittsburgh

In Seattle trying to become personable with someone was the equivalent of knocking on a complete strangers door, inviting yourself in and grabbing an apple from their fridge....based on their "warm" response - (yes thats sarcasm there)- thats how it felt.

Loved the pulled pork sandwich at the GA Pig abt 4 years ago when we were there. THe service was fine and I did not find it dirty, including the restrooms(and I am a health inspector by trade). fyi. beth

Good luck. I was there two years ago and found the barbecue chopped to the point of being pulverized and quite dry. Smokey Joe's in Darien or Twin Oaks Drive-In in Brunswick may be a better bet in that neck of the woods.

(2 different ladies- two stops) The guy who did the meat-cutting never said a word.

If better places in the area have failed, I have no idea what keeps the GA Pig in business???:?

I believe all of the above posters are correct with their assessment of Georgia pig. My first experience with them was a few years back when I stopped there with an executive of Aventis HR. She was Black and the staff really was not friendly. In addition, their BBQ sucked.

I have passed that exit on I-95 and have never stopped again and never will and based on recent experiences by posters on this thread, I would suggest none of you do.

WJ-
Us Pittsburghers thank you for the compliment. But, I would gladly trade that honor for a winning baseball team!

BTW, my dealing with New Yorkers have generally been very positive.

I've had very good experiences in NYC, the people were friendly and offered help as I'm staring at a AAA travel book. Trying to get my bearings.

Except for the bicyclist that ran into me, fell over and then decided he needed to kick my ass with his bike lock. He and his bike paid a heavy price for that foolish mistake.

Warms the cockles of my heart Mike Like most folks, I've always had very good experiences in NYC. But no matter where you go, every now and then you come across someone who needs an attitude adjustment.

John, you know how big I am. (6'5" 325lbs) Now picture me at 25 and about 450 lbs. (Way big and strong)He was really stupid for trying me in the 1st place. I'll always remember him laying in the street moaning, not my bike please... not my bike. As I jumped up and down on it. Better it then him.

Ok the whole story, I'm at a street corner in Manhattan waiting for the light to cross with a bunch of other people. I have 1 foot on the sidewalk and 1 in the gutter. This guy on a bike hits me from behind and goes down. Totally suprised me and staggered me some. He gets up, grabs his big metal U shaped bike lock and wallops me across the left upper jaw and temple. I get pissed off and tear into him. When I'm done with him I start into the bike. I figured he's an idiot because he ran into me and then tries to kill me with the bike lock. I cussed him for a month because it hurt to chew.

Otherwise i've always enjoyed my trips to Manhattan. I even enjoyed that trip.

I have had mixed results from the GA Pig over the past few stops. The past 2 stops have been a negative experience, thusly have been crossed off my list of CajunKing approved places to eat.

Since there is several other bbq spots throughout that area.

Off topic for a second.....

Regarding the references to "New Yawkers". As one who grew up in NYC, I always found New Yorkers wanting to be "invisible" to others as they walked on the street. But, if a "nice" stranger approached one on the street asking for directions, they would go out of their way to be nice and help them. This doesn't apply to beggars and bums, however.
Moral: The easiest way to "disarm" a New Yorker is just be, friendly.

Ok, back to the topic......

/me waves to numbwall . . fellow Columbian here.

Tara did you know about either location of Duke's? There's one off the Walterboro exit, which is I think around the 30s, and there was one off the Ridgeland exit which has to be close to the border.

I think I'll skip the Georgia Pig.

I think Maurice is buying up locations outside of Columbia, probably to get away from the large amount of negative karma he has here. I noticed yesterday on the way back from the Charlotte airport he has a location at Dave Lyle Blvd now, probably in an old Quincy's building, which has been his MO of late.

I saw the sign for Dukes by Ridgeland.
Open I think Thurs-Sat or sun.
I went by on a Monday and got bummed out to see the days they were open. Plus it was a PIA to get back onto I-95 south from there.

If you are looking for cue near 05 in Brunswick, go 1 exit notyh from the pig, proceed north past sonnies & go to Allen's in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center. Great Pork Ribs & only place around with decent brisket. Owners are nice abou 1/2 mile off of 95.
