Pig and Steak is still in Madison. It wasn't very good the last time I went.

BBQ Ranch House is interesting. Love their fries.

But the absolute best BBQ in Virginia is Dixie Bones in Woodbridge. So many sauces...so little time. I wasn't impresed by the potato salad, but I dumped a little mustard on it and it was much better. I need to try their ribs.

Buz & Ned's is now my favorite BBQ in the Richmond area, beating out the Pitt and Cowlings. The Smokey Pig is, IMO, overrated (although they do have good hush puppies). Extra Billy's is okay, but it seems every time I go in there the place is full of screaming kids.

      Dearfolk,
Hear tell good things about Allman's BBQ at 2000 Augustine Avenue in Fredericksburg. There is a next-to-the-Interstate location, but the one in town is where the old pit is. You can smell the wood coming down the street, which is U. S. 1. There is mention of Allman's on the "Ice Cream & Custards / Custard in Northern VA" thread here.
From what I am able to squint and see, you'd get off the Interstate at Plank Road or William Street (it's one continuous street) and head into town. When you intersect U. S. 1, head left (northish) and proceed about four blocks. It's on the right, before University Of Mary Washington.
This is, according to several accounts I've read, the absolutely farthest north outpost of edible BBQ in Virginia.
Secondhandedly (I'd Be Hunting Those Stores If I Went There!), Ort. Carlton in Athens, Georgia.

I don't know how I happened upon this site but I am happy to have wandered in!

I can certainly second a trip to Allman's! I grew up eating their pork bbq. I love their sauce - can't find anything like it where I am now in TX. I miss it so much I've had it brought to me on family members' road trips and my trips up there I stock up as well.

Last time I was there (the old one on Rt. 1, - I didn't even know there was a new second one) I was fortunate enough to sit at the table next to "Mom" while she took a break from the kitchen! Be sure and tell her hi and thank her, she's a good, hard-working woman!

I have a new one for you all:

In Toano, VA, west of Williamsburg on Rt. 60. A little place called "Smokin' Joe's." They apparently started in Kilmarnock and have places in Smithfield and Hampton. We have tried their pulled pork and their ribs and both are very good - BETTER THAN PIERCE's! I am intending to try the brisket and smoked chicken in the next week.
Good sides too - especially the mac&cheese.

One of my co-workers went to Williamsburg for the weekend and I told him he had to go to Pierce's Pitt BBQ. He says he tried, but the line was so long it was out the door and the kids didn't want to wait. Apparently, Pierce's is still doing something right!

Hey all, one of the best Bar-b-que places in Va (IMO) is the Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford (by Wintergreen Ski area) on Hwy. 151 Great ribs and chopped/pulled pork sandwiches.

Does anyone remember Herb's down in Suffolk. It wasn't too far from the NC border.

When Herb owned it the food was great. I'm not sure if it's even still there.
