Why no reviews of such places as Mighty Midget? It even made a Zippy the Pinhead comic one day. Maybe the best BBQ in DC area and its in a section of a B29 bomber.

    mconfoy,

Could you please tell me (us) a little more about this place and where I might find it? I will be in the DC area over the first weekend in Sept and would love to find a place to go while in the area. Anyone else who can help, please advise!!

            wrfc5,
One of our radio stations here is WRFC, named for original 1948 owner L. H. Christian's father, Robert Franklin Christian. The call letters roll right off the tongue.
After over 50 years of continuous family ownership, the Christians sold to a local chain; the format is now all-sports, and the station is called The Ref. L. H. is, incidentally, very much still alive.
Can't eat it, but nice trivia anyhow, I s'pose.

              Dearfolk,
Although it may well be reviewed herein, I can recommend King's BBQ in Petersburg very highly. It's on U. S. 460 Business Route; anyone thereabouts will gladly tell you how to get there: it's an easy loop to King's and back onto the interstate from either direction.
You can smell the wood smoke all along the highway. No gas logs for these folks!

Mighty Midget was a place my wife and I tried to go to, but ribs have only been served on the weekends, and first come first served.
When we were in the area, we chose not to head in their direction due to the uncertainty.

Also on Rt. 460, in Waverly, Va., about 1 hour southeast of Richmond, is Cowling's Barbecue. They do the real pit smoked barbecue in a building behind the restaurant. You can have it pulled or chopped and you can get the crispy edges if you like. I've enjoyed this place many times. The sauce is available on the side, not already mixed with the meat.

In central Virginia: Try the Silver Pig on Route 29 in Madison Hts., just north of Lynchburg. Great barbecue, coleslaw and hushpuppies, the place is a gem. It closes at 8 PM (and on Sunday), as I remember, so get there early.

Indeed, very interesting. May I say that I much enjoyed the town of Athens, GA, prettier and friendlier than its namesake in Greece.

Buz & Neds is good and Big Daddy's on Jhanke is very good, but when I look for BBQ in Richmond it means a drive down Semmes to see if Tex is out. From downtown you take either the Lee or Manchester bridge to the intersection of 301 and Semmes. Down Semmes a couple blocks at 22nd is a christian goods store in an old 7-11. Look for the station wagon and cooker in the parking lot, if he's there stop in and let Tex talk your ear off for a while while he makes you a Tuxedo dog. All beef dog, split and smoked, filled with slow cooked onions, hand chopped beef brisket BBQ... An experience to savor.

Pierce's Pitt Barbeque in Williamsburg (I-64 just outside of town). I never miss it when Mrs QFan and I head to the Burg. Also a great website if you want to mail order. Their sauce is terrific.

In Richmond: The previously mentioned Buz & Ned's - excellent pork or chicken. Yummy sweet potatoe fries and baked apples.
Extra Billy's - great brisket. Owner apparently went to Texas to learn ow to do it right. Also v.g. smoked sausage and pulled pork.

I'm intending to try the ribs from both places ASAP. Maybe our 1/2 day on Dec. 22. Take it home and compare it to the following.
In Wiilamsburg: Pierce's, also mentioned above. We love their ribs. I believe the pulled pork has lost some quality of late. They do really good hamburgers, too.
I've heard of a place recently I'll probably include in our
"rib tasting" - Smokin' Joe's. It's original location is Kilmarnock and they have places in Toano, York County, Hampton, and Smithfield.

Also in Hampton and York County: County Grill and Smokehouse - very good very everything - brisket (a very close second to Extra Billy's), pork, and chicken (what I usually get). Excellent grilled veggies and banana pudding to feed an army. Takes twenty minutes for them to make it.

Lastly, in Hampton is Wilkes BBQ. Eastern NC style. Actually, I'm not sure if it is really barbeque. I suspect they do it in the oven. But it is closest to what I grew up on, so I have a fond place in my heart for it.

I look forward to trying Mighty Midget, King's, Ben's and many of the others in the future.

                                Happy 'quing!

I've been to many of the places mentioned, but am shocked not to see the Smokey Pig in Ashland. It is just north of Richmond on 95, and an excellent place to have some great pork and hushpuppies. They only do BBQ, and do it very well.

From the list, I can also vouch that Buzz n Ned's is excellent, and that the Mighty Midget is well worth a trip. Also a place around Manassas called Wilbur's that is quite a find in Northern VA.

Dixie Bones is good but I would rank it below all of the places I mentioned above, IMO.

Oops, forgot about the Smokey Pig - v.g. BBQ. But I musy correct you, they do do other things. I saw someone eating a good looking Chicken Fried Steak when we were there. Want to try that when we go back.

No one has mentioned Checkered Pig/Pigs R Us in Martinsville. We have never eaten there, but know Tommy from the competition circuit. We have eaten his hushpuppies, which he vends at contests, and they are good.

                                        Hello All,
In the Harrisonburg area, we have the Smokin'Pig and Bar-B-Q Ranch. Both are excellent.

I have been to three of the places mentioned, Smokey Pig in Ashland, Dixie Bones in Woodbridge and Pierce's Pit in Williamsburg, plus the highly regraded King's Barbecue in Petersburg. For me, Pierce's Pit was clearly the best. Great pork bbq sandwiches along with really good sides. The one negative....both times I have been there they have been maddeningly crowded. And the small parking lot doesn't help.

Hey, buffetbuster, glad your taste buds and mine think alike. Just a reminder that you've got to get that extra "t" in Pierce's Pitt Barbeque--or it ain't the same thing.

I also enjoyed the Pork Q at Pierce's as well as the Sweet Potato Sticks. I don't recall being overly impressed with The Smokey Pig and didn't like their Brunswick Stew at all (too soupy)
I've never been to Kings, although I hope to one day. I'll probably never make it to Dixie Bones, too far north of BBQ territory for me.

Ahhhhh, I hate when I misspell something! You would think a guy from PITTsburgh would not make that mistake.

I agree with you about Pierce's sauce. I have a guy who works for me with the last name of Pierce, so I brought him home a bottle of the sauce. He loved it so much, he now mail orders it on a regular basis.

Pierce's Pit. Haven't been near there in years, but when I was, it was excellent!
And those pictures a few posts back are just plain mean... when you can't taste that great looking cue!

Also, ate at The Silver Pig late in January... Excellent!!

I am always amazed how well Pierce's is liked. I went there the Sunday after Thanksgiving day. The place was packed at 2pm .I havent eaten there in year. I couldn't believe how much sauce was on that poor pig. I honestly could not identify any other flavor than that sauce. I was truly sad that pig would be sacrifise for a sauce sammich.Even worse people would think it was the best thing since slice bread. Maybe I was like that before I started the BBQ pilgramage.Since I have started doing BBQ competitions, giving classes , lectures , catering and Judging BBQ. things appear different to me. I guess I have lost my innocence.I am glad that Pierce's is here , just a lot less sauce please! Remember the sauce should not be the "boss" , the pig has a bigger commitment!

Awesome pulled, sliced and brisket and the 6 pack of sauces on the table is a nice touch. BEST rum-laced bread pudding around. The chef/owner is a huge guy - 400lbs.
