The BBQ Cook-off in our town today and tomorrow. My question is this, they are trying to get more people there, They are doing a $5.00 arm band thing, pay $5.00 all the food for free. Would you attend. Know alot sell to recoup expenses, but way to low on my cart. A person can still keep showing up and get a slab for $5.00, LB brisket and pulled pork. We will see how this turns out.

First, how will the sponsor divide the arm-band proceeds among the contestants/vendors? What share is the sponsors? Second, I think you will be give the food away free! Third, I would not give food to someone that is piling up a BIG plate or box. Him and a friend will simply carry food back to a tailgate to feed 4 more friends. Fourth, Don't give rack-of- ribs to the arm band customers, single ribs only.

Isn't the BBQ going to be served? Not "serve yourself"? Portion control seems to be the key, and yes, I would attend and be satisfied with a little of this and a little of that.

Will only make money for vendors if the serving size is a sample size and everyone has long lines and the serving time is limited, i.e., no loading up.

I see these kind of events often although I have never been an entrant to one. Most of the time they require that all entrants smoke a certain number of pork shoulders and ribs that are then to be given out BY THE PROMOTERS as samples. In other words you cook for the contest and select your best products and then turn your ribs, pork shoulders, and brisket into the judges and the remainder is then give to the promoter to be portioned out to the crowd. On occasion the team that actually cooks the product is instructed to pass out free samples of leftovers to the non entrants. Jack

We have a chili cook-off here once a year. The promotor sells small cups for a dollar or so, then you can go around to each of the contestants and get a small sample of their offerings. The cooks recieve no monies, the promotor gets the proceeds for his upcoming vacation.

here in Muskogee Ok they have a Soul Food Cook off around Martin Luther Kongs Birthday--and its seems to going across several states soon---they charge $5 for folks to sample--the contestants give out small samples for 4 hrs--and thier are LOTS of enteies so even a tiny sample from each will fill up the best of eaters---trust me on that!-there are judges that rate eash of a bunch of catagories and the public gets to vote for Peoples choice awards--at the end they gicve out prize money--up to $1000 now for the main dish division and eveyone LOVES it--there are more and more entries every year and it has become one of my favorite days around here

Now I was knowledeable as to paying for samples, this year they are dropping the parking fees and Pay $5.00 for all you can eat arm band. Now some actually have vending licenses and sold dinners and such. Just heard about this venue change from customers at Fri lunch. Haven't been in 5 yrs always working another event in another county. Been to many a BBQ Cook-Off but never heard of this. Maybe economy with this pricing will draw them in. Know Orginizers have to recoup cost for prizes and plan for next year. 50 plus pro contestants getting big. http://www.lawrenceburgkiwanis.com/news.php?cat=10&type=news
