For any one interested, this weekend in Hunter MT. New York

Tap NY a food and beer festival..... (from the web site)

New York State's largest craft beer festivals. For 2005, in it's eighth year, TAPSM will be bigger and better than ever before, with over 100 beers from 30+ breweries across the state. We're not talking about mass-produced, big-corporation beverages that come out of 20,000 gallon vats in a 300,000 sq. ft. production plant. What we are talking about are hand-made beers.... beers with enough personality and genuine taste to be called "craft-brewed".
And food!

Sounds interesting. To those not aware, Hunter Mountain is a ski resort in the Catskill Mountains, in Hunter, NY; on RT 23B outside Catskill, NY. I grew up in that area, on the Eastern bank of the Hudson River, in Hudson, NY. It is a beautiful area, with many small towns along Rt 23A, including Tannersville, not far from Hunter. Lots of good Roadfood places, although many are a bit upper scale due to the influence of the NYC dollars which have moved into that area. There are beautiful mountain trails between Palenville and Tannersville on state park land if you enjoy hiking. The main trail leads up to Katterskill Falls.

The past few years, Hunter Mountain has been running some wonderful festivals to add variety to the area, and provide an attraction outside of the skiing season. We have a few excellent microbreweries in Rochester and I wonder if they will be there.

Just checked the site alesrus posted and while Bru and Rohrbach Brewery were invited, they do not appear to be attending. Too bad, as they are both on-site microbreweries with restaurants who make some excellent award winning brews.

if anyone gets a chance to head to this festival, make sure you try a Six Point Craft Ale. It's made by a friend of mine in Red Hook (Brooklyn), and is really excellent (I like their Amber the best).

Unlike the Brooklyn Brewery, which contract brews their beer in upstate NY

I see Ommegang is going to be there. This makes me somewhat melancholy: I did a lot of field work with people in a job I loved back in the winter of 2001, many of those evenings in the hotel after work were spent consuming this beer. It's as close to being belgium without actually being in the country, what a spectacular beer, and Berndog, you are quite right, Columbia and Ulster County NY are among the most picturesque places east of the Mississippi River. Almost makes me lament all this new daily sunshine I have discovered out here in New Mexico. I would love nothing more to attend this festival if I could this weekend. Unfortunately, such is not the case. Even more saddening is that my entire family, minus myself, will be attending my cousin's wedding in nearby Fishkill (in Dutchess County) this Saturday. That would have made for a great stop for a few hours on Sunday.

I wish I had never read this link!!

We are indeed going to attend on Sunday. I'm just bummed 'cause I'm designated driver! Ales drives home from the wineries, so it's only fair.

Berndog: any must go Roadfood places? If there's any room from the food at the festival, we'll stop for dinner! Looking forward to the drive too.

Vegas: I'll tell your friend you said hi, and we'll be sure to sample the Six Point (I can at least have a sip!!)

and Tamandmik: We won't take pictures and rub it in - wish you could be there too!

If anyone does decide to go we'd love to meet - we'll be there Sunday with some friends. Sue

aleswench, sorry, but it's been too long to remember specific places and they may have changed hands or closed by now. There was a wonderful Italian restaurant on Rt 23A in Catskill(and Hunter and the other places I mentioned are on Rt 23A, not 23B)that served one of the best dishes I have ever had, Shrimp Monachina. (Funny how I remember the name of the dish, but not the place that served it.) It was large shrimp cooked in marinara sauce topped with mozzarella. I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but it closed about 15 years ago.

Mike's On the Point in Catskill, right on the edge of the Hudson River served fantastic NY/CT style thin crust pizza, also either closed or under different ownership. Have a great time, and I'm sure you'll find some interesting places to dine. I wish I was going to be there with you.

Back from the Tap NY show. I will have a much different opinion than Bob - who is laying snoring in his recliner, buddy Paul sprawled on the couch. I have nowhere to sit except for in front of the computer or bed. Too early for that. Anyway....2 hour drive up was uneventful until we got off the Thruway. The waterfalls on the way up to Hunter are beautiful. What scenery....and sometimes scary, with the road being so close to the cliffs. I may add that I am very proud of myself navigating those roads, post festival, with two sleeping "drunks" in the car. I probably pissed off the cars behind me, but at least I made it!!

I, personally, was extremely disappointed. Being designated driver, all I had to look forward to was the food. It was AWFUL - GOD awful. Inedible. What made me so mad was the fact that they touted this event as a culinary pairing with micro brew beers..blah blah blah...it was TERRIBLE. Being in the trade show industry for most of my career I wanted to scream - their food was made by whatever food service company caters to Hunter Mountain Lodge. Most of these generic service companies barely make a decent ham sandwich, let alone pulled pork. And hamburger heaven???? It was, no joke, a star shaped () pattie thing that tasted like some kind of filler - I would not have fed it to my dog. Spit the first bite into a napkin and the rest in the trash. So basically, I paid a $20 admission fee for one "ok" coconut shrimp. Oh..and a cup of coffee. Woo freakin' hoo Ok rant over..I'm just cranky that I couln't taste the beer. Bob & Paul sampled them all - and I sipped a few of the best. Most notably - Keegan Ales - Mother's Milk - fantastic. Secondly, Ommegang- not sure which one it was, but phenominal. And third, as ironic as it may be: Middle Ages brewery - Wailing Wench. Had a great rootbeer from Saranac as well. I know that High Point Brewery won top beer, but I have to look up the others. I'm sure it will be on their website. - So, all in all, this was a wonderful time for the beer tasters - not so wonderful for the sober folk. I definitely need to apply to the event management as a consultant - they could have done so much better to make the DD's happy - microbrewed sodas - birch beer, orange, rootbeer etc. And had some decent food vendors!! I gladly would have paid them for some real BBQ (as they advertised) or real ANY food. But, the beer was excellent - what made the show was the exhibitor breweries themselves. Because of this trip, we will head out this summer to Keegan's brepub/restaurant, and others in the area. However, next year, I think we'll organize early and rent a bus....like so many groups did. That seemed to be the way to go. Wish there were roadfood sound - you cannot believe the snoring from the boys - I'll be laughing at them all morning when it's time to wake up for work heh heh heh One week till Philly/MD - Sue
