BEWARE Roadies Sat, 04/2/11 11:07 AM (permalink)
Last Sat morning, while still half asleep, I opened a post from UPS.
It told me they were attempting a delivery and for the tracking # to go to the following download.
Bingo----I contracted a virus.
My provider could not help.  But, they told me to get a technician.
Norton cleaned the entire slate but could not solve the problem
Microsoft wasn't any help either.

So I got a technician and now I am back on line and $100 poorer.
I called UPS and they said they never send E-mails to recipients, they only communicate with senders.  Now they tell me.

Be careful out there, and have a good day.

I spotted the UPS one in my Junk mail folder, and got rid of it.

Today I got an e-mail from Kroger stating, "Kroger wants you to know that the data base with our customers' names and email addresses has been breached by someone outside of the company. This data base contains the names and email addresses of customers who voluntarily provided their names and email addresses to Kroger. We want to assure you that the only information that was obtained was your name and email address. As a result, it is possible you may receive some spam email messages. We apologize for any inconvenience."

All I know is that I was suckered-----and it was all my own fault---never get up in the morning and do anything serious---wait  until after the cocktail hour when your senses are sharp and your brain is at top speed.  Cocktail hour has been extended to hours between 1pm and 7 pm so you have lots of time to be sharp, witty and perfect in all you do or say.

It would have been cheaper if you caught the virus instead of your computer

Ancient One, with daylight savings time, here in Maryland, by law, a mandatory happy hour is in effect from 10:00am to 8:00pm, our lawmakers want to be witty, sharp, and perfect, all day long...me too, burp!

I got one a few weeks ago.  I almost opened it since I was expecting a package in the mail.  Thanks, I just now deleted it.

I would never have believed that I would miss the computer as
much as I did.  A whole week with no mail, no Roadfood, no news,
didn't know what was happening in the world.  Then after a week I got back into the news and it was the same stuff as before.  It was as
                        if I had never left.

Your right Joe, a nice virus to me would have been easier than one to my puter.  And Chewy burping on the internet is not nice, where are your manners?  By the way, there is a great story about your restaurant on the front page----don't miss it---headlines about Cherry Blossoms--look
                        it up.

Also beware of pop ups that tell you your computer is infected with viruses in all different folders and asking you to click to fix it. Unless this is a warning from the actual virus siftware you are using, it is likely a trick to get you to download something that will be very hard to get rid of.

Tony, once you get that pop-up... you are already infected.  It's a bear to get rid of.  There is a 2010 version or that one and the new, improved 2011 version.
The longer you try to fix the problem, the deeper it invades your files and registry.

That can certainly be true, as there are many varieties of mess one can step in on the internet, but many are rather simple versions that require you click on them in order for them to start the infection process.

If you are dealing with the more aggressive ones like Mar describes, not much you can do as you are in trouble already, but for others, don't click on anything...not even the little X in the upper right. Best is to open your task manager and close out of your browser that way.

Exactly!  The way I repair these nasty viruses is to use my second computer to Google the fix.

The day I left my job the other employee's computer got the 2011 version.  He kept clicking on the window that popped up with "the fix" while digging himself deeper in to the hole.  Closing down is a good thing.

I saw that in my Yahoo mail, but I never use Yahoo mail for anything like that. And then I saw that it had been cc'd to about a thousand people....
