BK vs. the Microwave

Is it true that BK no longer flame broils their burgers, but only nukes them? I've noticed you never see smoke nor smell meaty odors in their general area anymore. And the last one I got that I asked for fresh off the broiler was hot but soggy wet. No crispness.

Yes, I went to Burger King. I confess, I have a weakness for whoppers. At least, I did. So, Adjudicator, you're saying they still do flame broil them?

Hello All, Pwingsx, I, too, am a sucker for whoopers. I am probably wrong, but believe they flame broil them in a galaxy far, far away, and ship them to their stores here, where they are nuked. Another theory I have is that they flame what they believe will be enough for the entire day early in the day, then place them in a container until they are ordered by the public, and then nuked. It makes me sad. I remember seeing the flames rise and smelling the meat being flamed broiled...but that was in a time long, long time ago. Take Care, Fieldthistle

Sadly, the present day whopper does not compare to what it once was. It tastes fake, like all man-made ingredients, plastic-y. It amazes me they can make a profit.

Hello All, John A, I haven't had food my way since my momma's health got so bad that she rarely cooks. A couple years ago, I had a co-worker that was 20 yrs. old and his favourite food was Hot Pockets. I went into instant mourning. Take Care, Fieldthistle

I used to work at Burger King(circa 1996) and from what I remember, the burgers were cooked to order cause they could only be out for 10 minutes. So I can't imagine they nuke them. Its not hard to put them on the conveyor belt and run them under the flame. Now, what they do do is after its flame broiled they put the cheese on and throw that in the microwave to get the cheese to melt. But the burger is fully cooked by then.

This reminds me of something I was told a while back by a BK franchiser. While the broilers are still used, they are not used anymore to completely cook the burger. The microwaves are used to finish off the cooking prior to serving. Unfortunately, I understand the economics. With burgers cooked "to order" via the broiler, that would mandate a BK establishment to do 70+K weekly to justify serving hold times for fully cooked burgers. In fact, there would be no holding time as product would be served immediately. I will agree that there is little better FF available than a hot off-the-broiler double whopper. For a particular unit to do this much volume to justify same quality; the waiting line would pretty much have to be "outside of the door" at all times.

When a new BK opened on the border of Chicago and Evanston, Il many years ago, a co-worker took his 2 kids there to try it out. Having never been to a BK, he mistakenly read the menu-sign as "Whooper," so he ordered 3 "Whoopers." The young cashier asked him to repeat his order about 3 times and he finally yelled out, "WHOOPERS. I WANT 3 WHOOPERS!" In a minute, she placed 3 drinks on the counter in front of him. When he asked what those were, she said it's the 3 root beers you ordered. She thought he had a speech impediment.

HAHA! In the mid 80's,when I was in HS I worked at Micky'D's. One time I was working the regsiter and a lady with a thick Southern accent asked me for a foke. I honestly had no idea what she meant. None of us did, not even the manager. Finally I had her spell it for us. F-O-R-K! Oh! FORK!!!! we all said. Poor lady thought we were just being teenaged Yankee snots, but honestly we did not understand what she meant. She got her fork, and her food on the house

when i worked for burger king in 1982, the meat was broiled medium-rare, was placed in the toasted buns and held in a steam table for a maximum of 20 minutes (but sometimes longer...) microwaves were used back then for melting cheese, the only thing that was completely cooked from raw in the microwave was the bacon. actually i don't think it has changed much from those days.....

Is it just one of my fuzzy memories from my childhood or was it necessary to use two hands to hold a whopper? My kids don't believe me when I tell them this. When did they shrink them?
