A double green chili cheese burger from the Golden Light on old Route 66 in Amarillo. Outstanding!

A few days ago, I made a less-than-enthusiastic comment about the loosemeat sandwiches at Madvek's in Hammond IN. Since I'd only been there one time, I started thinking that maybe I was a little hasty in making that statement, so I went back for lunch today. I'm glad that I did; today's loosemeat was an improvement over my previous one. Every restaurant has an occasional off-day, and I guess that was the case with my first visit. I glad to say that I can now recommend Madvek's for anyone doing a NW Indiana roadfood tour.

A while back I read one of KingT's posts about NW Indiana food and remembered the reference to Madvek's loose meat sandwiches. I have not had a loose meat sandwich since my last trip to Iowa several years ago. The fact that you had a good experience means that I need to add it to the list for my next trip to the Chicago area.

Double cheeseburger from Kewpee's (Racine, WI) When recently asked whats the best burger I've come across, whether it is or not, Kewpee's is the first place that jumped to mind. Stay tuned.

IntelligenT82 - I'm a huge fan of Five Guys and I actually think their fries are even better than their burgers. The problem is one is; they have a new location opening about 1 mile from my apartment this Monday. So I may have a heart attack by Christmas!

How does the Elevation Burger stack up against 5 Guys? I notice Elevation Burger is a budding chain from 5 Guys' original territory.

Love the Burger Photo's !!! I have found that I no longer can tolerate Mushrooms on anything (post-Gall Bladder removal) as much as I love them going down...They make me pay within a very short period of time... So no 'rooms on mine please. I haven't had a Frisco Melt from Steak n Shake for several years. I recall them as a wonderful taste treat though. I guess we'll have to stop at one soon to renew our memories.

Here is the mushroom cheeseburger my boyfriend had yesterday at Jake's Hamburgers in Chadds Ford, PA. My only problem with his is that the cheese on the top patty is not melted enough. I had the same thing but without mushrooms. I'd have to say these are the best burgers from Jake's I've had yet. This is the first time we've been to this location. It's a not-too-big franchise, by the way...not a chain!

If you can't pick up and eat a burger without half of the toppings falling all over the place, then its a pain in the butt. I wish these places would take just as much care about the quality of the bun, as they do the burger. Notice, the better quality steak houses that serve a think burger, serve it with a bun that carries the load of the burger, and toppings.

Harriet, all that I'm getting is that "photo currently unavailable" nonsense, with a "Flickr" logo at the bottom.

KingT, many thanks for this incredible thread! And the fact that you were patient enough to post all 30 pics in one post is noteworthy, too! Sadly, I've not been to one of these places, especially in and around Chicagoland. That's probably due to what Carolina Bob eluded to earlier: Chicago has so many other specialties that I wouldn't really think to put burgers on my must-try list. That could change, though! Thanks for the inspiration... Chris

Next time that you and Amy are in town, I'll take you on a Windy City burger tour ( be sure to bring your appetite. )
