Bagel...?

Moin Forum!

I like Bagels, with sweet, and also hearty toppings. Good Bagels are hard to buy here in Germany, most eaters here confuse a good Bagel with a Donut...

What is your fav. topping for a Bagle, did you ever bake Bagles yourself?

I prefer a german-made Bagle "sweet", with salted Butter, Peanut Butter, and marmalade, "hearty" with butter, cream cheese, turkish garlic sausage, or Gravlax from Norway...   +++ Tabasco...

How do You like your fav. Bagel dinner?

    A nice everything bagel; toasted,  with fresh vegetable cream cheese, sliced tomato, onions, and lettuce.  A little salt and pepper, and you're all set.

    Should really be from "the city" though.

    Turkish Sujuk is very well known here in Germany as a hot Pizza-Topping, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sujuk

    This special sausage ranges from very mild, to very hot, I prefer the mild turkish versions, served with a pita, as a pizza topping, and on a bagel, or just plain, the variations are endless...

    My favorite bagel sandwich is either an onion or sesame bagel with cream cheese, kippered salmon, a slice of tomato and red onion.

    If the bagel is fresh, it doesn't get toasted.

    A thin slathering of cream cheese, a ton of lox sticking out the sides and a bit of sweet onion.  I like this best on top of an onion bagel.

    The lox could also be substituted with smoked white fish.

    If a bagel is toasted all it needs is real butter.

    If a bagel is fresh out of the oven, soft and hot...  I'll eat it plain if it's a sesame bagel.

    Now I want all of the above!

    Yes, Publix sells it in the bacon area.  I used to eat it at my grandparents in south Jersey as a child.

    I like my bagel with cream cheese.
     
    The New York bagels are the most famous in the country. However, there are other areas in the country where a shop or small firm bakes excellent bagels. A few of my favorite shops in New York City:

    If you live in a bagel-deprived area, I suggest you see if any local supermarket carries Ray's NY Bagels . I was born & lived most of my life in the NYC area. During that time, I had bagels that were better than Ray's, but I also ate a ton of them that weren't as good.

    AH the bagel!!!  Fresh warm onion bagel--cream cheese-lox-Nova Scotia please and plenty of it--red onion-tomato-IF_ it is summertime vine ripend and not a hothouse red cardboard---and a sprinlkleing of capers!!! The real breakfast of champions!!!

    I agree with David_NYC. I can get some pretty doggone good bagels here, but the best bagels I can get here are only as good as an average NYC bagel, and the best bagels in NYC are a work of the baker's art.

    I'll take 'em almost any way. I suppose I prefer blueberry with cream cheese, and cinnamon/raisin with chunky peanut butter.

    I'm working on a NYC bagel study right now.  Bagels in Manhattan are pretty much the focus.  I'm trying to find at places in at least 5 different neighborhoods that I can recommend to get a good Everything bagel with cream cheese (my favorite thing to get!).  Hope to finish up the study in a few weeks and follow-up with pictures and a report!

    When I lived in Yonkers growing up one of my favorite things to do was to drive into The Bronx, under the L, and pick up a dozen or so bagels from the local bagel factory/store and drive home with that aroma permeating the car.

    I get that same satisfaction almost now driving to Blue Ash and coming home with Marx bagels (owned by a Catholic but they follow all the Kosher rules).

    That is probably not near  as bad as having to eat lousy pizza all over the country for the most part.

    BTW, my sources tell me the one bagel = 5 slices of bread.  I prefer the 5 slices of bread, Italian of course.

    First choice: (Fresh) not toasted plain with a shmear, nova and (preferably red) onion.

    If you read the history of bagels you will find they began next door in Poland -  even given the world wars and the Holocaust I find it hard to fathom not being able to get great bagels there.

    We have a great bagel factory store in Blue Ash so that is good for us - as far as good Italian bread Meijer Supermarket sells Ace Breads from Canada made like you mention and we get it generally about once a week or so as they are only 35 or so miles down the road.

    Too bad you you can't get great pizza sent that way.
