Baltimore, MD. restaurant review Sun, 01/9/05 9:20 AM (permalink)
We had a very early dinner at my favorite Roadfood type restaurant in Baltimore. One must go early or wait forever in this small Greek gem called Samo's, located in the Greek section of Baltimorem just a skip and jump away from I-95 on the eastern side of Baltimore. Zagats gives this restaurant a 27 rating for food which is higher than nearly every restaurant in Baltimore and is well deserved. The food is wonderful and the prices are low.

Yesterday, for example, they had 5 different "soups of the day" which included seafood chowder, vegetable beef, chicken rice, Avgolemongo (Greek egg and lemon) and one other. The most expensive was $3.50. The bowls are huge and , along with their wonderful hot buttery pita bread, make a full meal. Their fried calmari is just as good as any found at the finest seafood restaurants and the Greek salads are wonderfully fresh, filled with the best feta cheese, and served with their special homemade dressing. They bring the salad to the table with a tall bottle of their dressing and everyone helps themselves.

The gyro sandwich, at $4.50 was my daughter in laws entree and it was huge. One of us ordered the moussaka (half of it is in the fridge right now) and another ordered the combo platter (3/4's of it is resting in the fridge) which consists of Souvlaki, (marinated chicken, pork, or lamb cubes on a skewer), a gyro, spinach pie, dolmades, oven roasted potatoes and other vegetables and tzatziki sauce.

The combo platter is the most expensive thing on the menu at $16.95 but easily feeds 2 hungry people. No wine or beer is served but you are invited to bring your own which really helps keep the cost of dining out down. The menu says that it has a two dollar charge per adult that is drinking but they have never charged us yet.

The place has been in business for quite a few years and I hope that the Sterns will stop in there the next time they are in the Baltimore area. It is great!
