Baltimore to DC to Williamsburg to Winston-Salem law school tour-Where to eat? Tue, 03/2/10 10:47 AM (permalink)
My daughter has been admitted to several law schools and we are going to visit them next week.
We will start at the U of Maryland's school which is located in Baltimore, then go to American Law school in DC.  That is followed by William and Mary in Williamsburg, and we will end up at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
Does anyone have any ideas as to where to eat by these campuses?  I would like to know a few places within walking distance.  Thanks to all who reply.  This board has never failed me yet.

I've always loved the food at the K&W Cafeteria chain, based in Winston-Salem. They have 32 locations in four states, and three of them are in their home town. Looking at their website ( www.kwcafeterias.com ), it appears that none of the three are particularly close to Wake Forest, but I still recommend a meal there.

I was at the Washington College of Law at American to speak at a conference last April.  I'd recommend Wagshal's Deli, http://wagshals.com/  A very easy walk from the law school.  It's tiny, and not cheap, but offers good made-to-order deli sandwiches.

Tenleytown is half a mile away, and there are many restaurants there.

The Lexington market is a couple of blocks from the University of Maryland law school. There has been much written on the Failey's crab cakes in earlier posts. Trinacria's is another block and a half away from the Lexington market and they have great subs but you can't eat there (carryout only). Here is there website http://www.trinacriafoods.com/.

I should have mentioned that there are two Wagshal's establishments in the same shopping center complex (next to the Washington College of Law).  One is the deli, which I  described in my earlier post.  In addition to sandwiches, they have terrific bakery goods, too.

At lunchtime, the separate market serves three kinds of burgers (beef, turkey and vegetarian) and all-beef hotdogs.  I've never tried them, but I've been told they are exceptional. Wagshal's gives a student discount, in case your daughter decides to enroll at AU.

Wagshal's is one of the few remaining "service" butchers in D.C., and their meat department is worth a look if you have time.

When staying at the National Harbor, MD, we took a water taxi over to Alexandria, VA.  Lots of good seafood places and really historic/touristy (if you get over that way).

I used to live in Old Town Alexandria, and I love it.  But my husband commuted to work in Baltimore for several years.  It is a long haul -- roughly an hour driving time unless you exceed the speed limit on I 95.

Now -- if you are planning to go to Williamsburg from Baltimore (or vice versa) via Alexandria, it might work.  But Old Town is not remotely convenient to the U of Maryland - Baltimore campus,  and it's at least 25 minutes (or more) from Washington College of Law at American University.

                  .

My picks for each one that captures the flavor of the area
                  - I've been to all those locations

                  UMd Law:
Faidley's at Lexington Market for Crab Cakes in Baltimore. It's blocks from the Law School.
Miss Shirley's 750 E Pratt Street - a diner in name, but really soul/southern goodness

                  AU Law:
*Chef Geoff's 3201 New Mexico Ave, NW: A NW DC popular spot - excellently prepared food
Two Amy's - true neopolitan pizza 3715 Macomb St, NW
Cactus Cantina - Tex Mex - fresh food, great margaritas 3300 Wisconsin Avenue

                  William and Mary:
King's Arm Tavern - colonial williamsburg - there are some other dining choices in Colonial Williamsburg, this one is my favorite and if you've never been before, is a real treat. But there are many non-colonial williamsburg restarants right there at the college that also have a colonial feel.

                  WFU:
*Village Tavern - 221 Reynolda Village - not too far from campus, a sort of WFU/Winston tradition in quaint Reynolda Village. Most students consider it a parents-weekend, homecoming, first date staple.

The main student haunt is a place called The Pit  - it's the on campus eatery and is pretty good. When I was teaching in Thomasville, NC, my kids always begged to eat there when taking field trips to WFU music department concerts. But, if your daughter is going to go to school there, she may get sick of that place real quick once she's a student.

If you get a chance, visit Old Salem - a moravian community, and like Williamsburg, but on a smaller scale, a living museum. In the gift shop there are these moravian cookies, super thin ginger cookies - out of this world good (if you like ginger cookies).

Grab,  here's a photo of that all lump crabcake that you're going to get at Faidley's in Lexington Market just up the street from U of MD Law.

My other favorites are the Shrimp Salad on Rye from MARY MERVIS DELICATESSEN, the Western Fries from PARK"S FRIED CHICKEN and for dessert, a couple of Berger Chocolate Cremes from BERGER COOKIES.  You'll find them all in Lexington Market hon.

Well, we got back and we ate very well thanks to you folks.  We tried the crap cakes at Faidley's, and they have ruined us for all time.  We will never have any better!  In Washington we had a sandwich at Wagshal's.  That place brought back fond memories of my childhood in NJ.  In Williamsburg we decided to satisfy our BBQ craving and ate at Pierces Pit.  It was the only disappointing meal of the trip.  I suppose that after eating Carolina Q for decades, Tidewater Q just doesn't stack up.  We also had a sandwich at the Cheese Shop in Williamsburg, and was pleasantly surprised.  Try the Virginia ham.  We decided to eat a steak in a more upscale place in Winston-Salem, and went to the Tavern Inn as suggested.  Great service and food.  Final score, 4 outstanding meals, and one so-so meal.
Thanks to everyone who posted.  Y'all have never failed me yet.

I find Marvelous Market to be equally as good in the sandwich department, but much less expensive.

Wagshal's grocery items are pricey too. There's other local markets in NW DC that have good quality foods with out the high price tag. Same with the wine.

Rent must be high in that little shopping center tucked between AU Park and Spring Hill Valley neighborhoods - two extremely affluent neighborhoods.

If your daughter picks AU Law, I'll let her in on some of those options.

But, you'll get no complaints from me on Wagshal's quality. I used to stop there on occasion when trying to get to Bethesda for evening rehearsals with the National Philharmonic Orchestra Chorale when I lived in Glover Park, before the Music Center at Strathmore was built.

When I lived on that side of town, my Mom always wanted to make a trip to Crate and Barrel across the street from that shopping center. There was no Crate and Barrel in Syracuse, so she could buy some stuff and save on the shipping. It's still one of her favorite stores.

oh! and I'm glad to know that Village Tavern is still a great place to go.

Although  my son enjoys Pierces for barbeque, I do not care for that place at all.  The only thing that I ate there that I really liked were sweet potato fries.  I went two times because rest of family wanted to stop there.

She's waiting to hear from W&M.  If that doesn't work out it looks like Wake Forest.  Her choice also depends on what day it is, weather conditions and the phase of the moon.

WOW --- admitted to 'several law schools'.

As a former (retired) professor, I find that VERY impressive.  But, perhaps you meant to say, 'accepted' by several law schools (the law schools are VERY competitive at this time).

Whatever.  As a long-time resident of the area, and as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University, I would suggest that you simply swing over to Baltimore and enjoy some Faidley's crab cakes.

You will NOT regret the culinary experience.

                                      I'd recommend Wagshal's Deli, http://wagshals.com/

I finally made it here and for lunch this afternoon. Outstanding! Had a (requested) lean hot pastrami on rye. Very, very good. Sliced paper thin and wonderfully prepared. I only wish I had first seen the prepared hot food bar in this small, wooden floor delicatessen located in D.C.'s Spring Valley section as it featured a spectrum of delicious-looking offerings including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.

In the words of General Douglas MacArthur, "I shall return!"

She's waiting to hear from W&M.  If that doesn't work out it looks like Wake Forest.  Her choice also depends on what day it is, weather conditions and the phase of the moon.

I went to med school at Duke, nearby (to Wake Forest) and the decision was based almost entirely on weather and azalea blossoms.  When I was doing my campus tours, the alternatives were places like Penn and Columbia where it was still winter with piles of nasty dirty snow everywhere.  In Durham, the sun was shining, it was warm, the azaleas in Duke Gardens were beginning to bloom and most of the student body was out tossing frisbees.

Duke Gardens on the campus of Duke University (which is quite large but has gorgeous little spots like this everywhere).

                                          Faidley's crab cakes.

I won't quibble at all with the choice of Faidley's, but another spot in Baltimore that hasn't been mentioned is Attman's for yummy Kosher delifood:  http://www.attmansdeli.com/

I'm betting the corned beef sandwiches aren't still $.25 like they were when I was a student in Baltimore, though.
