Outside of the touristy places, which are quite good, there is a neat roadfood-type diner in the middle of Banff called Joe Blftspkqs (yeah, that's right), named after the character in Lil' Abner comics. But the food was great, burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, etc. Always crowded and it's small so be prepared to stand in line. It was -10 below when we were there last New Year's.

I live in Canmore. The place we go to most often is a family run restaurant, Patrino's Steakhouse on Bow Valley Trail. Try one of their Greek dishes or the seafood lasagne. When we eat in Banff its usually at the Silver Dragon for Chinese. Joe Btfsplk's is now called Joe Diner but still serves a great burger.

I hope you will have a good amount of time for Banff National Park--it's gorgeous. I haven't been there in years, but there was a road that went around the back of the golf course over right by the Bow River below the Cascade. You will be the only car on that road. Go at end of day to see the elk but be OUTTA there before they lock the gate. Find the golf course and then ask... You will be glad. Have a great time!
