Looks like it would be terrific if it didn't have all those vegetables in it.

You wouldn't like it, Michael. It's not kosher!

Banh Mi sandwiches were all the rage here a few years back, They are delicious! Especially when served on fresh baked Baguette.

True, this place, ABC Baguette, bakes them for several places in the "Little Saigon" area. Sometime's I'd just buy a few extra baguettes!

Hard to beat freshly baked bread, especially the smell.

We call them Vietnamese po boys here and they are very popular.  There's a large Asian supermarket near me that sells these at in inside concession.  My favorite is the meatball, moist and they'll put some of the gravy on it, for $2.50.  Alongside the sandwiches they sell the same type French bread loaf they use for the sandwiches, a steal at 3 for 75 cents.

It's the vegetables that provide that adventure in taste (cilantro, cucumber) and the difference in texture (carrot, cucumber).  Otherwise it would just be a pork sammich.

It's the texture of those vegetables that I don't like.

Our local Vietnamese restaurant finally knuckled under and started offering Banh Mi sandwiches.  I approached them several years ago, asking why they weren't on the menu.  The owner told me he wasn't interested because there would be too much sandwich competition from the Subway store around the corner.

I almost gagged.  I tried explaining that they were completely different, and that anyone interested in a good quality Banh Mi wouldn't be caught dead in a Subway franchise.  it took a couple of years, and probably more than a few other customers urging him to do so, but he finally made the addition, putting up a sign in the window just the other day, "Vietnamese Sandwiches Now Available".

Still haven't got over there to try one, but I'm looking forward to my next day off when I can stop in for lunch.
