Barack Obama To appear at BBQ & Blues Event

This event draws between 5 and 10 thousand without Barack Obama. So now I'm cooking my tail off trying to get enough ribs, pork, and beef done to handle an even bigger crowd. I called several more people to work the event and the only thing that can go wrong would be bad weather. Although we have had rain previous years and as soon as it stopped we were packed. Every year we have long lines and serve from noon to 11:30 or so. I'll post a note after the event and let you know how it went.

Barack Obama's campaign has confirmed the apparent Democratic presidential nominee will make a public appearance at the Old State Capitol in Springfield on Saturday to kick off a series of stops leading up to next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Victoria Clemons, executive director of Downtown Springfield Inc., said that organization has been in contact with Obama's staff, and she doesn't think an Obama appearance at the Old Capitol will conflict with the Old Capitol Blues & BBQ Festival, also scheduled for Saturday.

"We’re really excited about the possibility of the presidential candidate coming this Saturday," Clemons said. "I think both events downtown can work well together regardless. I think we can all coordinate this and make it a great event."

Obama is on the verge of announcing his choice for a vice-presidential running mate. There was no immediate word whether that person would be in attendance with Obama on the pre-convention tour or whether that person's identity will be confirmed during the Springfield stop.

I just read that Barack WILL be appearing with his running mate this Saturday in Springfield. Sounds like you're going to have about a billion people there. Go get em!

Thank you, I just heard our local TV station say they expect Obama to draw 15 thousand by himself so if you add that to what we already expected we will be swamped from start to finish. I'm going to triple what I planed on taking to the event.I'm sure we will run out anyway but I'll give it my best shot.

will it get locked out ????? The Dr of BBQ's first paragraph
was OK but all that followed was taken from a newpaper or other
media source. Not good on Roadfood.

1st It was taken from a newspaper article, but it was a breaking news story which was followed up by a more lengthy story this morning. Which I did not submit to this forum.

2nd I took all the political information out to avoid exactly what your accusing me of doing.

3rd I'm a long time republican-conservative but when it comes to my food I'm neutral of any political thoughts. If I can get a picture of my food, trailer, or staff with anyone of any importance you can bet I'm going for it,no matter what party he or she may be involved with.

4th There were NO Politics in my post what so ever, so get off your high horse and relax.

Now I have to go back to work so things will go well this Saturday.

By the way use your spell check once in awhile.

If you were catering a 10,000 person meal for McCain, I'd find it interesting. I guess I don't see a political connection.

I do not think the post has ANYTHING to do with politics. It is all in regard to the nature of the BBQ Festival which Dr. BBQ will be "working" in a food-related sense, and the increased publicity (and crowds) that can/will be expected and/or diverted due to a Presidential candidate being in the immediate area, at the same time of the Festival. It was logistical in nature, not political.

Jack - I'm with you...you were already doing the Event...the presumptive nominee just adds to the chaos...and potential for increased food sales. Go get 'em!

What on earth are you talking about???? The thread and the posts ONLY referred to how many people will be attending a rally, and how it would affect selling BBQ.

There are PLENTY of innapropriate threads and posts on this board to complain about. This ain't one of them.

Billyboy - Illinois. Springfield is the capital and Obama announced his candidacy there some time ago and is making a full circle...and he enjoys a good BBQ now and then!

I never interpetted this as anything political, I thought it was DR of BBQ letting everyone in on his good fortune.
