I have found Nirvana. About 1.5 miles outside of Loop 1604 along Hwy 87 near San Antonio, Tx is a tiny restaurant with the best barbecue I have ever had. "Home of Da Smoke Barbecue" is owned and operated by Robert Norman. He's had an even smaller place nearby for the past two years but just this month relocated to this one. The new place has not more than half a dozen tables inside, and some picnic table seating outside.

The food is absolutely amazing. His sauce is seasoned rather than overspiced and it is an excellent complement to the meat. My favorite item was the brisket which was so tender it could be cut with a butter knife. The side orders are listed on the menu this way "soul food sides that taste like grandma made em" and I agree wholeheartedly. Its been a very long time since I had cornbread that delicious. Excellent texture and flavor.

I realize I've used a lot of superlatives, but this place deserves every one of them. If you get down this way, you need to make the side trip.

I met Mr. Norman tonight while I was picking up my order and he and the counterman Alex were both friendly and informative. Prices are about average for this area.

faces directly on 87, left side, past Lone Oak, about 2 miles outside 1604 towards La Vernia.
