quote:Originally posted by emsmom May I ask " What is Beef on Weck?" Beef on weck is a sandwich found almost exclusively in/around Buffalo, NY. It's fairly simple: slices of roast beef on a "kummelweck" roll -- a hard, salted roll with caraway seeds. The sandwich is often served with horseradish. Unlike chicken wings, which have found their way around the country, beef on weck remains a regional specialty as far as I can tell. I grew up near Buffalo, and it was very popular.

The sandwhich is pretty tasty if it has quality fresh roast beef, good horseradish and really good rolls. I used to get it in Albany and Saratoga often. Usually the roast beef juices soak into the roll to give it a light gravy flavor. In Saratoga you should also check out Hattie's Chicken Shack for excellent chicken, then go up the street to Cafe Lena where Bob Dylan made one of his first gigs after arriving from Minnesota. Lena's used to have good espresso and deserts.
