Ben's...Washington Institution

I've been to Ben's Chili Bowl a number of times on this and other folks recommendation. To tell you the truth, I find the chili and the dog to be good but I cannot see what causes all the hoop-la about the place. The dogs are good and so is the chili. But they are not amazing. I've have better dogs and chili. Second, I don't think you get the value for your money. A half-smoke with chips (not even fries) with a drink cost me over $6. Why all the fuss for a fairly good dog that is in IMHO over priced?

Unfortunately, I have to agree. A few months ago I made my first trip to Ben's in almost 20 years with my brother who had never been there. I used to go fairly often back in the 80ds and I seem to remember thinking they were great back then. However, on this most recent trip I was kind of disappointed. Either they weren't as good as I remembered them or maybe I had been away too long. And yes, I also think they are way overpriced. I'll take a street vendor half-smoke (less than half the price) over Ben's any day. I'm going to D.C. this Wednesday and I am already drooling over the half-smokes I'm going to get while I'm there. I'm going to bring some home with me too.

I don't think their hot dogs are nearly as good as their half smokes. I think their half smokes are out of this world. And their chili is just perfect. The combination is just delicious. I don't think $4.15 for a big half-smoke with chili and chips (what I paid this past Wednesday) is outrageous. Pretty cheap for a lunch in these parts, actually. But yeah, there is hardly any way to eat as cheap as you can from one of the carts. But then you don't get a restaurant to sit down in either.

You could try Weenie Beenies in Arlington. It's been a very long time since I was there but I remember liking them when I worked in the D.C. area in the late 80s and early 90s. I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of them if you go. Weenie Beenie Sandwich Shop 2680 S Shirlington Rd Arlington, VA
