the Berlin Tpke. that runs from wethersfield,ct to meridan,ct. For an example, starting from north to south onthe southbound side, the first one would be Hooters, which was a Bonanza that started out as a Hojo's. further south was a KFC, next to the Macrus Diner. further down is the "99" rest, that was a Lum's that was origially the Sesame's drive in. Down past Bowl o rama where the porn store is now,was a bar called Jim Carty's.further south where the used clothing store is, that was originally built as a Carroll's. Next door is Mc'Donalds, still is. Next to Mc'ds was a Dunkin Donuts, which was originally a Mister Donut.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
Let's have some fun remembering some great old places.

Don't forget the original Lobsterman which burned some years ago. Similar new place called the Blue Lobster I believe, is further south and on the southbound side. Same area, Olympia Diner which is timeless. At the north end, northbound is the Carmen Anthony Fishhouse formerly Piccadilly Pub, Seafarer and Red Coach going backwards in that order. South end in Meriden, northbound, is Sans Souci, an excellent restaurant which was previously La Vie En Rose and a HoJo in a former life. Just south of that was Vaccaro's, now a crumbling derelict after a stint as a girlie joint.
More to come, just found this thread but it's too late to think tonite.

One last thought for tonite, don't forget Doogie's two foot hotdog stand which has a review here on Roadfood. Another fire victim alas.

C'mon back Bob, don't make me do this alone. I see Doogies is reopened.
Others remembered, DePasquales, replaced by another sorely needed Circuit City; Matarese Rest., Wonder Bar south end of Berlin southbound, Manero's Steakhouse near the current Ruth's, Italian Kitchen before it became a "Gentlemens Club", and the Hawthorne Inn forever.

very good Roy, thanks for particpating. it semms like you've been racking your brainwith some good rememberances. lets keep those in mind for further reference. I'm going to continue from where i left off, and go a little further south. please feel free to fill in any
blanks.
just south of the mexican place where the citgo is now was A&A garage, the guy tht ran it (polumbizio) was the chauffer in the 1st Godfather movie.
Ruths Chris was originally Mattarese circle Rest.

next door is now Doogie's used to be Tom & Pats drive in. after that was the Tivoli Gardens rest. What wasthe name of the chinese rest. that wasjust to the south?

Darn, you beat me to it. I was gonna say that the full name of the restaurant was The Matarese Circle. I used to see that place when as a kid we drove to visit family in NYC--I'd wonder what it was like. Never did get there nor to the other places you and Roy have named (except for the Olympia Diner--it is timeless). BTW, believe the name of one place you mention is Makris Diner. My how that road has changed--never was the same following the opening of Rt. 91.

I don't think the name of the restaurant was Matarese Circle..that was the title of a book by Robert Ludlum..I believe it was just Matarese"s. I could be wrong.
Another new restaurant that has already changed hands is the Koh-I-Noor down in the Meriden end in Gandhi Plaza (really)!
Not much to do with Roadfood, but we should compile a name of the 40+ motels that line the road.

Another golden oldie which is still serving is Mortensons Dairy in Newington southbound and though I don't want to get into the newer fast food places, Roy Rogers has been serving up its burgers, fried chicken and roast beef sandwiches on the north side across from Bobs Classic Furniture longer than I can remember. Another place not really classified as a restaurant but??? was the cafeteria in the Gem's membership Dept store southbound in Newingtom. The SO worked there about the time I met her in the previously mentioned Jim Carty's bar in 1968 with my long lost pal, Jimmy O'Shea. Whatever happened to you Jim?
I have to take a road trip up the turnpike to refresh my memory...I know I can come up with more.

Roy, you're probably right about Matrese. That's what we just called it. Roy Rogers was originally a Hardees. I worked there in 71 72? For $1.91 an hour.
I don't remember the cafeteria in Gems. Mortensons had the restaurant on ground level & the family lived upstairs. Which is where Bertucci's is right now.
You're all over the place, but you're racking your brain, which is good, but let's continue on going north to south.
But what was the name of that Chinese restaurant after the Tivoli Garden, about where the Lens Crafters is now?
Is this Big Y Roy?

Sorry, Bob...I can't help with the name of the Chinese restaurant. Also, I've never been in a Big Y in my life..different Roy. I'm a New Havener married to a Newington girl..traveled the road daily for years.

Wasn't there also a place that had a big sign about steak sandwiches? Somehow, the word "Fingerling" comes to mind, although I may be thinking about the potatoes. I just recall a steak sandwich sign on a place on the Southbound side of the turnpike. Help!

I think the fingerling steak sign was at the place on the southbound side near the Berlin/Meriden town line (not sure which town it was in)that in more recent times became a breakfast & lunch place that specialized in Polish foods. That has gone out of business fairly recently too.

The link below will bring you to a photo of the place as it is now sans the fingerling steak sign. It is in Berlin and is apparently for sale.

I don't know about restaurants on the Berlin Turprike. I grew up in New Haven, and the only reason anyone I ever knew went up the turnpike was to buy gasoline during the gas wars. Heck, I never noticed a restaurant up that way -- just high test at 16.9-cents a gallon in 1950,1951 and 1952. We'd drive up and get 50-cents worth, maybe a buck if we had unlimited funds.

Just to keep this interesting thread alive, how about Tina's Diner on the north end northbound where there now is a Christmas shop. Also, though not on the Turnpike except for the signs, southbound near the Hawthorne, the Dannheiser Inn on the road to Silver Lake. Ate there once with friends and were ushered into the dining room through the kitchen for a very unusual and memorable experience. Thanks Hildy!

Wonderbar was where the Peterbily Truck place is by Meadow Lane southbound in Berlin.
Manero's was where the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades office is also southbound in Berlin.
Lofts Candy was where there is currently the Washington Professional Building northbound just a little south of the route 9 overpass.
The Potlatch which burned many moons ago was where there now is an empty overgrown lot southbound just south of the route 9 overpass.
The 99 Restaurant was previously Uncle Joe's and before that, Uncle Ezra's.

Bob, we're not dead yet! Unfortunately, I have nothing further to add and apparently was mislead by my wife about the location of Manero's according to your last post. I personally don't remember the location. Was there ever an eating spot at the Grantmoor (Gruntmore)?

Red Coach before Piccadilly was the Seafarer for a while. If you miss it, they have reopened on Route 63 in Woodbridge a couple of years ago.
Mary's diner I don't know the location though the name is familiar.

I moved from Connecticut in the 60's,but as I remember, was not the Hawthorne Inn on that byway
Wonder if it still there?
They had the best prime rib.
I can remember buying a 27 pound lobster at the Lobsterman place.
They had to cook it before we took it home.
We didn't have a pot large enough
I still have the large empty front claw hanging in the den
The lobster cost 50 cents a lb because at the time no one wanted one that big

well it looks like this thread is dead,to bad, what a gastronomical location that was.
with the exception of 2 or 3 places the rest are chains... typical, people want the same no matter where they go in this country to bad.
a line from the movie Demolition Man..."All resteraunts are Taco Belle, they're the only ones that survived the franchise wars"

We came from Andover and went to the Chinese Hitching Post for special things.
The Diner was on the way home from NY visits.
There was a Table Talk Pie place we use to go too and a Rail Road Salvage store a couple of great rest stops.
Thanks for the Memories.
I wish it was like that today.
