The New York Times keeps writing about the same restaurants everytime they review BBQ's. The best Smoked food in Manhattan is at Mara's Homemade on East 6th Street.

The smoke is just perfect and they use there own sauces and rubs with great flavor.

Last year they won the Best of CitySearch for BBQ.

Go try it for yourself and you be the judge and let the New York Times know.

I gotta tell ya, I've been a HUGE fan of the Dino for years (and always will be). I'm more a fan of the atmosphere and the huge menu that Dino has, but I've been checking out RUB a bit lately and the smoke in their 'que is making me crazy! I loves it, and loves it good! Paul's got some killer burnt ends, nice and fatty, crusty and unsauced. He lets YOU decide how much sauce you want on them. The smoke ham is really good too. Moist, smoky and has a nice chew to it. I did find the pulled pork a bit mushy though. The smoked turkey is really good, but I think I'm just so used to it at Thanksgiving, that it hasn't won me over as a barbeque dish yet.
The potato salad is perfect. If I'm right, there is a combo of mayo and mustard in it that brings a harmonious balance of creamy and tangy to it that plays extremely well off of the meat. And the mindblower for me are the beans. Ohh, the beans! Cooked just right and swimming in a goopy, tangy, smoky sauce that words cannot do justice to. The kicker though is the amount of burnt ends to be found in these beans. Nothing says barbeque beans better than smoky meat!
RUB and Dinosaur both have great food and selections that offer something different than each other. I think RUB has got better smoke penetration on the meat, but I do wish that they offered some kind of sandwich combo, like a sandwich with 1 or 2 sides and some pickles. The 1/4 meat choices are great as they give one a good chance to pick and choose a bit to try and then go back again and get a whole platter of it anothe time. Keep crankin' out the good stuff, Paul!

Just went to R.U.B. again in NYC. A buddy of mine came down for the weekend and he'd never been there and I've been talking it up for some time. He really liked it, but we arrived later in the evening, so some of the things he'd hoped to get were already sold out. Thats the way it goes. he really liked the greens and I think they were a mix of collard, mustard and spinach. I told him he HAD to try the beans and he loved them!
My girlfriend had them pulled pork and turkey with beans and coleslaw which she enjoyed immensely, but couldn't finish. Too much she said.
I had the 1/4 of brisket and 1/4 of sausage with beans and tater salad. Great as always with one exception. The sausage had a great meaty flavor and nice smoke to it, but the texture was crumbly when I bit into it. Somewhat disappointing, however, I had no problem eating that, a nice blackened crusty piece of brisket and a bean sandwich I constructed with some leftover white bread at about 2am. Oh, the glory of it all!

Dinosaur - the ribs are amazing and the Key Lime pie is to die for.
