I'll be venturing out of the Carolinas and up through Johnson City soon. Can anyone recommend a great, real-wood bbq joint in that area?

I agree about Ridgewood Barbecue. I haven't been there since the owner died, but I hear it is still just as good.
Two things you should know:
1) It can be very difficult to find.
2) They close in the afternoon for a few hours. You definitely want to call ahead to make sure they will be open when you are in the area.
