Many differences of opinion, of course.

A lot of people would say the Corner Bistro, in the Village on West 4th and Jane streets. Personally, I prefer The Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien Hotel on W. 57th (don't be fooled by the fancy location. It's roadfood). I'm also a big fan of McCale's in the theater district -- a huge but very tasty burger. On the Upper West Side, there's Big Nick's, but not everyone agrees with me on that one.

There are others, of course, but these are some of my favs. Unless you want one of the $60 burgers at DB Bistro....

I am not familiar with what has opened lately, but when I lived in the City, Corner Bistro was as good as it gets. Mustard of course, and onions. Naturally, it should be rare to properly savor it.

I'd have to say that the Corner Bistro is tops in terms of burgers in the city, followed closely by Mchale's. However, a place that I never see mentioned in these forums is Island Burger. It's a surf-inspired hole in the wall on 9th Avenue (between 51st and 52nd) that is a winner just for the sheer amount of toppings available. Great milkshakes too. It's tiny, however, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a bit.

Corner Bistro all the way. The Bistro Burger has bacon on it that is deep fried...watch how you order though - rare is almost cold.

"Blue 9 Burger" in the East Village, a counter service, storefront, joint serves up the best tasting, drippiest, juiciest, burger in the city. Their ground beef and fresh cut fries are never frozen, and they griddle cook your burger on their flattop grill right when you place your order! They never pre-cook the burgers and fries, as I have never seen a warming light in the place. You can find them at 92 Third Avenue ( between 12th and 13th streets).

    The Corner Bistro

    J.G. Mellons

They are both reasonably priced and very tasty.

If you can drive ~30 minutes north of the city, Squires in Briarcliff Manor, New York is the best burger I have ever had.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I can agree that Corner Bistro has possibly the best burgers in NYC, but the word is out and they have terrible lines. A place I love that rarely gets mentioned is Paul's on 2nd Avenue (just below St. Marks). They make great burgers, have a variety of toppings (if you're into that) and are a great bargain for NYC.

my fave is a random place called caliban on 27th and 3rd. they serve them on english muffins. i am NOT a fan of old town - over-rated. or a fan of the db foie gras burger - and not because of the money.
Personally I prefer to make my own. I can control the quality of the meat.

Corner Bistro in the West Village has one of the best, if not the best, burger in NYC. Cozy Soup and Burger is a 24 hour diner on Broadway near Astor Place and they also have an excellent burger.

I enjoyed the Corner Bistro (good burger, but yuppie hell) but the Burger Joint at the Le Parker is indeed better. (Island is overrated, in my opinion.)

However, the BEST burger in the city (and the best burger I've ever had) is at Paul's Palace on Second Avenue, just south of St. Mark's Place in the East Village. Serious half-pound burgers, dripping and messy, with the best pure-beef flavor I've tasted. Good shakes, too!

Burger Joint is excellent, maybe the best value in NY. Prime Burgers is good, plus they have these little desks from kindergarten that you can eat at if you don't want to sit at a table. Burger Heaven on 49th isn't bad either, but Island is a little better. People in my office swear by the burger at La Cite, but it would hardly qualify as roadfood.

Peter Luger's lunch burger is excellent and the 3/4 pounder from the 21 Club is great (albeit pricey)...

Thanks tonemonster2! I just checked out Prime Burger on your recomendation, and was really impressed! Did you know that they have just won a James Beard Award? Not for their food, but for their Retro Pop-Luxe decor! Wow! They are stuck in 1965, as that was the year they last renovated their interior. Good burgers that also bring back memories of the sixties can also be found here, and they made a killer chocolate shake! For those of you who want to find this joint, they are right next door to Saint Patrick's! Go there before it becomes a Starbucks or a Duane Reade!

I was in NYC for business a couple of months ago and had a great burger here:

Just got the "classic" with carmelized onions & cheddar. Outstanding!

Rare is good. But don't get the truffle butter burger: I felt ripped off, because it was far more expensive but added nothing to the flavor. I tried it on a lark.

The joint that's next door to Smith & Wollenski; I can't remember the exact name but it's Wollenski-something. Best burger in New York!
