Best Fried Shrimp?

The picture posted by Lindapalooza (sorry can't link) in the Going to Beaufort, S.C. thread made me desperate for some good fried shrimp.  I find that these days they are becoming quite hard to find.  Most places use the flavorless farmed shrimp, and those that use Atlantic or Gulf shrimp tend to avoid frying.  I just want a shrimp that tastes like the sea and is perfectly fried, is that too much to ask?  So does anyone have a favorite place for fried shrimp?  If a decent hush puppy is also available that is a major plus.

In SW Florida it's Alice Sweetwaters in Naples. Their Breaded Pork Tenderloin ranks up there with Iowa 's best!!!

Charleston, SC has several great places for great fried shrimp, but the best I have ever had is the Roadfood reviewed O'Steen's in St. Augustine, Florida.

Dixie Crossroads  in  Titusville, Fl.  has  wonderful local fried shrimp.

I have never even thought to order fried shrimp at Dixie Crossroads.  If I am going there, I am getting the rock shrimp - broiled.  The one time I was there and they didn't have rock shrimp, I ordered something else (honestly, I don't even remember what it was), and I remember thinking that the next time I come, I am calling ahead to make sure that they have rock shrimp.

They do have an extensive menu, but I have never been impressed with anything there but the rock shrimp.  Maybe I will have to give the fried a try the next time I am in a pickle.

I will second the nomination of O'Steen's as the best fried shrimp (certainly in northern Florida).  I was also a fan of the shrimp at the now-departed Anchor Line on Folly Beach (near Charleston).

I haven't had the fried shrimp at Dixie Crossroads, but in the same general area I can recommend the version served at the Dock at River Rocks. That they come with great views of the Indian River & the place is less than 5 minutes from our house might be biasing my opinion.

B&J"s Steak and Seafood in Darien, Georgia has really good shrimp as does Skippers Fish Camp just down the road. Pat's Fisherman's Wharf in Henderson La. also has excellent fried shrimp. Don's in Lafayette,and Baton Rouge are also very good. Mike Anderson's in Baton Rouge also has good shrimp. I ate at Skippers on my way to the Ga. - Fla. football game and at B&J's on the way home. Both meals were very enjoyable. I have not been to La. in a couple of years but these restaurants have always been good for shrimp to me.

I 2nd B&Js in Darien way over a pound of Fresh Wild Ga Shrimp for around $15 they are the best deal around for great quality. Fri & Sat they do a buffet, for a smaller appetite the shrimp basket has around 3/4 lb.

Had lunch at Skipper's in Darien. Had both the fried and peel and eat shrimp. Both were some of the best I have had in a while, sweet and very fresh. I am in Jacksonville for the Ga. Fla. Game. We plan to eat at B & J's on the way home. I will report on their shrimp Sunday or Monday.

The shrimp at B&J's steak and seafood were my Halloween treat after a crushing Bulldogs loss to the Gators on Saturday. The shrimp dinner there is around $17.00, For that you get a pound of large fried shrimp, I stopped counting at 30. They were some of the freshest sweetest shrimp I have had in a while.

Combine egg, flour, salt. Add shrimp and stir until shrimp are coated. Heat salad oil and brown shrimp on both sides. Put aside to drain. Add onion to oil in pan and cook until golden. Blend bouillon cube, cornstarch, boiling water and soy sauce. Add to onion and stir until thickened.
 

 
 

 My #1 choice for fried shrimp would be the Star Fish Company in Cortez, FL.
