Best Kosher hot dogs

Hi,
I have a question. I sell Bests 8 to 1 on my hot dog cart right now. I want to start selling the 1/4 lb. hot dogs as well. Upon trying the 1/4 lb. dogs, I thought they tasted just a little bit different than my 8 to 1's. Is there a recipe difference between the 8-1 vs. the 4-1 1/4 pounders? Or is it just me. Curious.
Thanks

The meat used for the 8/1's is the same for the 4/1's. The taste difference is due to the density of the encased meat. For exapmle: ham can taste different when it's thinly shaved, compared to when it's thickly cut. Most Chicago hot dog stands use 5/1's for their "jumbos". My cost of a 4/1 is considerably higher than a 5/1. The 4/1's girth prevents it's from being loaded with condiments on a 6" bun. 4/1's sitting in excessively hot water for extended periods of time, expand too much.

    Hi,
I did not even think about that. The strange thing is the 4to 1 are cheaper than the 5-1. Unbelievable! 4-1 at Sams cost me around .51 where a 5-1 at my supplier runs .67. Does not make any sense.

Sam's Club buys their Best's Kosher products in greater quantity than anyone else. That's why you realize the difference in pricing.

Do you recommend serving 8/1 's?

If I do finally obtain the Home Depot location, I plan on serving 5/1 s.

At festivals and catering I always serve 5/1s and 8/1s.

Ronnie, 5/1's would be my choice at a Home Depot location(adult customers). 8/1's are good for kids and families. I've sold both. My experience has shown that 60% will choose an 8/1 over a 5/1. The 5/1 offers a much better profit margin.

CTD, Thanks. I'm sure our paths will cross some day. I live in southeastern Wisconsin and I'm in the Chicago area on a weekly basis. Drop me an e-mail if you venture out my way.

OK Today is June 27,2008, Where may I buy "Best's Kosher Dinner Franks" near Lake City Florida? That's halfway between Jacksonville and Tallahassee; halfway between Valdosta, GA and Gainesville, FL BJ's doesn't have them in JAX; Sam's doesn't have them. WHO sells them anymore? Or is Saralee just going out of business?

I'm doing a 4th of July Gig and I'm using a 7/1 Hebrew Nat'l Beef Frank. They're on sale now at Sam's Club And Walmart Supercenters for $2.50 a pkg. That's 36 cents a dog!

CORRECTION: They are 7 to a pkg of 12 ounces which makes them 9 to the pound!

    Navy,
We had two recent threads here about the disappearance of Best's Kosher franks:

No one seems to know the reason why. One member said that DOT Foods handles them. Try their warehouse in Vidalia, GA.
