Best Lobster in CT??

Aside from buying live lobsters and cooking them myself I have a hard time finding a great place for a lobster dinner here in CT. I like them either steamed, boiled or stuffed ...as long as it's lobster I'm not fussy. I already know about places like Abbott's (which I think is overprice) and The Chowder Pot but was wondering where all of you go for lobster. Thanks!

Where do you live? Connecticut is small, but not that small.

The best recipe is this: Drive about 3-4 hours north on I-95 to Maine, stop in any of the lobster dock restaurants and enjoy.

I go to The Barbeque Rest (the real name) for not fancy lobster. It is in Milford. I can give you directions. The best lobster roll is at the River Restaurant in Derby on the Orange line in the old Caldor's shopping center. I bet you would never think of an Italian place for lobster roll, but, trust me, it is good. They also serve whole lobsters on the weekend. Call ahead to reserve one. They will get whatever you want. Their Italian food is excellent, too. If it weren't a tad too far, we would go there weekly. It is that good.

There are many excellent lobster places in Conn., particularly east of New Haven along the Sound. Of course, Abbott's. Lenny's. Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale. Also a couple of places in East Hartford.

Is The Barbeque Rest on the south side of the Post Road, across from what used to be a garden place?

Some of the better lobster I have had has come from Price Chopper supermarket. They steam it for free while you shop, you take it home and eat it. To me, most restaurant steamed lobster is overpriced. Not much chief skill is needed to throw the lobster in a pot of boiling water. Baked, stuffed is another story, because kitchen skill does show up there. I know of one medium to high end restaurant that precooks it's lobsters. I bought it once before I knew. I will not make that mistake again.

The place in Milford is actually called the Bar-B-Que and yes, they do have excellent lobsters. Home of the twin lobster special ($18 last time I went). They also have excellent wholebellies and steamers.

The River is another of my faves, but I've yet to try the lobster roll. Next time for sure.

With the name Bar-B-Que I do believe it's the place I was thinking of. And if so, I was there the first time around 1949 or 1950 when it opened as the only barbeque place in Connecticut. It had a counter with stools, but no tables, and the barbeque was, to say the least, exotic. It was a wooden building, looking a lot like a log cabin, and they had absolutely fantastic hamburgers that they'd serve with something strange on them called chili.

    Michael

That's the place. Right off the Merrit Pkwy connector. Claims to be the oldest restaurant in Milford, though the Redwood bar & grill claims that they are the oldest.

I can't believe that place is still there. And now they're serving lobster? Things change.

The best lobster roll in the Milford area is at the 7-Seas bar in downtown Milford. It is on New Haven ave.

I sure wish Perry's was still around on the Post Road. Not only did they serve the first Connecticut-style lobster rolls, for many years they served the best.

Sure I remember Phyllis's Now, do you mean the one they opened in Milford at the New Haven Avenue-Post Road split, or the original in Savin Rock.

I know about these places and have eaten at all of them but have never (aside from lobster roll which is excellent) seen lobsters on the menu at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale. By the way, to answer an earlier post, I live in the far NW corner of the state in Litchfield County. BarbaraCT, thank you for the suggestion in Derby. I'll check it out! Thank you all for the great suggestions. I love the one about driving up I-95 to Maine....done that many times but not lately with the price of gas!

When I have gone to Maine lobster pounds, I have found them priced for the view and the rustic ambience. I haven't found the lobsters taste any different than our Connecticut ones.
(And my grandmother told me to eat lobster in the rough in your own backyard, so you can dip your elbows in the butter with abandon.)

Michael, glad you got the info. We went away, and I lost track of this "thread". In the summer, I have Shop Rite steam lobsters for me. They always have a sale on Father's day weekend. They have BIG ones too. We will have to go back to the River, soon. I love that place.

For those of you that love soups in the Milford area, try Bobette's Original Mussel Chowdah. http://www.bobettes.com/

They have Great Soups and Great Sandwiches. Check the hours though as the soups go fast. It's a favorite of every construction worker, cop, taxi driver in the area.
