Best Poor boy, Joliet IL

The best "Poor Boy" I've Ever had is at Merichka's on Theodore street in Joliet Il. I have been going there since the sixties. Although we now live in SC, we make a point of eating there whenever in the area. This is an old fashioned 40's style banquet hall / restaurant. With the exception of additions, still hasn't changed much. Their signature poorboy, is a cube steak on a 12" piece of crusty garlic bread (dipped in real garlic butter). Cheese is optional, but makes it great. The "plate" comes with a large double baked potato, which is excellent. I must not forget the Dill chips. This sounds like a simple sandwich but I've never been able to duplicate it. This is a well known local favorite!!!

I believe it is charcoal grilled. They also are known for their steaks.

I second that nomination. I live in the Joliet area and have to have one at least once a month. The garlic taste stays with you quite a while. The onion rings are also awesome.

Check out the www.cityofjoliet.com website for the history and some pictures of Merichka's. According to the web site, the steaks and burgers are broiled.

Oh how I miss those poor boys!! We are also in SC (although I spent my younger years in Joliet) and try to drive up that way every few years to see friends and eat at Merichkas. The onion rings are killer, too.

I remember the days after my bro was born at Silver Cross some 44 years ago, my Ma came home and told my Pa that she wanted a special coming home dinner that included a bottle of cold duck and Merichka's Poor Boy's. She ate 2 and I remember thinking where is she putting all that good grub..LOL
