Best Pork Roll (taylor ham) sandwich
Thu, 06/12/08 5:06 PM

I know this is very regional, but I was wondering what places people think serve the best pork roll sandwiches. Now I'm not talking about a pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich. I'm talking about just a pork roll sandwich (with or without cheese). My vote if for Cahoot's in Middlesex, NJ. They slice the pork roll pretty thick and lay it on with plenty of cheese. It's as big as their burger.

Sounds like a Treet-like version of a good old fried bologna sandwich to me.

We've done this in so many other threads...Pork roll is NOT Spam or Treet (which is more like the cold cut spiced ham)NOR is it like bologna...it has its own taste, that needs to be tried...It is dearly loved in the Jersey area. I had my breakfast Taylor pork roll, egg and cheese on a crisp kaiser roll this morning...it starts the day!!!

haha...lee you're correct. It's a flavor that can't really be described. I've tried to many times and end up just saying, "you just have to try it." What irritates me about pork roll is when people call it taylor ham. Taylor ham is a specific brand of pork roll and unless that place is serving that specific brand it cannot be called taylor ham.

http://www.jerseyboyporkroll.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?page=taylor Here's a link explaining pork roll, which includes a link where you can order either taylor or Case Pork roll...both of which are very good. We switch off, since both brands are excellent. I repeat...if you are out of the Jersey area or can't find pork roo, or just want to try it, here's ine link you can use to order some!!!!

I know what pork roll is. I have one Taylor pork roll in the freezer and half of one in my refrigerator. I like it because it tastes a lot like Treet and Spam.

A Local deli sandwich shop here sells Taylor Pork Roll,, this is how I got my sandwich.. They ask, and then put on only what you request.. Also, Piggly Wiggly sells Taylor Pork Roll in their deli section. It comes prepackaged..I think 8 oz....a little on the pricey side if I recall. hopefully, this thread wont take a downward spiral

Funny, but I never think of pork roll for a sandwich. I fry it up for breakfast with eggs, etc.

Michael Hoffman most people do think of it was a breakfast meet to go along with the rest, but it is delicious all by itself. It is a nice change of pace for lunch and excellent late night sandwich. I used to walk up to a place by me called red tower II late nights when I was hungry just for the pork roll and cheese sandwiches

The guy around the corner from me "Johnny's Deli" in New Providence NJ does a pretty good one. Sometimes i get just pork roll with mustard, sometimes I add cheese. Most of the times I get pork roll, egg and cheese... gotta switch it up Oh and if you just get plain pork roll, mustard has to be on it!

Make sense to me. I just never thought of it that way.

Am I in the minority here with my preference for ketchup on my pork roll and cheese sandwich (No egg)?

I prefer it without an egg also and with cheese. No ketchup. I live in Park Ridge, NJ and almost any Bagel place or deli around here serves pork roll sanwiches on a hard roll or bagel. I was teaching my daughter(she was a teen at the time) how to order one in a local deli. She is painfully shy so whenever she has to go in to a store by herself, especially for the first time, she becomes tongue-tied. We rehearsed and she did fine. I was glad I remembered that wherever you go around here, when you order any kind of breakfast sandwich, the response by the counter person is always saltpepperketchup? As if it was one word. After that first time she told me she was so glad I had told her they would say that because she said it sounded like a foreign language! She is nineteen now, still shy but she can order a pork roll sandwhich with no trouble.

Agnesrob...salt pepper ketchup is the best way to eat it but you are right they say it so fast if you aren't expecting it you won't know what they are saying. I still forget sometimes and have to ask them what they just said

I don't like ketchup on my breakfast sandwich, just salt and pepper...if I'm having a plain pork roll sandwich on a nice kaiser roll for a lunch, I'll add some deli mustard or even a little horseradish sauce....but never ketchup!

Love Pork roll with crunchy peanut butter. It melts the peanut butter just enough to make a fantastic, great tasting, mess. Levittown, PA there is a pretzel place that makes a pork roll and american cheese wrapped in soft pretzel dough and baked to perfection. Tony
