What are some of the best small-town, off-the-beaten-path, backroads restaurants in south Louisiana?

The 2nd (to Ueglisch's) best in the state is "Joe's Dreyfus Store" in Livonia, between Baton Rouge and Opelousus. It is also one of the most out of the way and in one of the least impressive buildings.

The menu is whatever the chef has decided to prepare for the day, and the food is ALWAYS outstanding. The pan baked oysters with artichoke hearts is one of the very best dishes I have ever had.

Hawk's, only open in crawfish season, between Eunice and Rayne very out in the country.--large, purged, very tasty. Limited menu of fried seafood entrees also are very good. Also has burgers, a nod to carnivores.

        The Yellow Bowl
State Highway 182 west in Jeanerette. Been in business since 1923. Try the crawish bisque & etouffe. The catfish is excellent!

Some other good ones I've heard are House of Seafood in Bush (near Bogalusa), Hymel's in Convent, Robin's in Henderson, and D.I.'s in Basile. Any others?

In Morgan City, there is a good Italian deli/restaurant called Castalano's. Their muffaletta is excellent, and they also have good spaghetti, etc.
Also in Morgan City, there's a small restaurant called Rita Mae's, that generally has good food, though the service can sometimes be hit or miss. I have had their gumbo, catfish, red beans--all good, and an excellent sweet potato pie. Most of the locals I have seen in there seem to enjoy the hamburgers, but I'm going gumbo when I'm in LA!

My Dad raves about great The Yellow Bowl was in the 50s and 60s. Especially the fried shrimp. I ate lunch there with him a few years ago and I thought it was excellent. He said it was good, but not as good as it was in the past.
A really good place in the same part of the world -- The Patio in Loreauville, La. Try the oyster po-boy. The guy who runs it (can't remember his name) is really nice.

Houma, just off Hwy 90. A Bears Cafe. Try the Catfish A Bear. Fried catfish topped with crab sauce. Everything I have tried has been very good.

Oyster Reef in Lafayette has the biggest fried oysters you'll ever see.
And this is an "R" month.

Mulatte's in Breaux Bridge (think I spelled that right) east of Lafayette. Great cajun food and music! Lots of friendly locals.

Robin's (as in Roe-bahn's, not like the bird) in Hendersonville is great, and you get to drive there via Trash Pile Road. Try the platter of multiple crawfish dishes!
