Best crab house in Baltimore? Sun, 07/13/08 10:29 PM (permalink)
HI everyone! My sister is coming to visit later on this week, and we've decided to go eat crabs. I've had the opportunity to do this a couple times this season, but it was part of professional events and the crabs were small and too much work. Has anyone been out there yet this season? I'd like to stay in the city, and I'd like to go someplace where we could large or even jumbo-sized crabs. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm thinking Obrekyi's, but it's been years since I've been there...

Joanie, wish I could help, but I haven't had any crabs yet this season.

G&M RESTAURANT IN LINTHICUM - JUST OUTSIDE i-695, EXIT 8 NEAR i-95 AND 895, THE SOUTH END OF THE BELTWAY. eXCELLENT WITH MINIMAL FILLER. EXCELLENT POTATO SALAD. BEWARE OF THE LINE FULL OF LOCALS. TAKE OUT AVAIL. THE BEST I HAVE HAD IN WDC-BALTO AREA.

Bo Brookes had super jumbo crabs the last time we were there. They were easy to crack and delicious to eat. It is fun to go there from the inner harbor in the water taxi.

The best thibg to do is call early in day and ask what the biggest size is that they plan on having that night and make sure that you get there early as the largest ones sell out very quickly.

I think they're looking for whole crabs, not crab cakes
However, without a doubt G & M does have the best crabcakes.

          Oh, welcome to roadfood.

Obryicki's gets all the press, but the locals go to eastern Baltimore County for either Mr. Bill's Terrace Inn or Costas Inn.

I agree on Mr. Bill's. They open at 4PM and they don't take reservations. Like Frank Pepe in New Haven when they open the doors the place fills up right away. Here is a review from the local paper.

...maybe off topic but if you decide on cakes, not shells, my vote is Angelina's in the County...if Phillips has crab au gratin still, it is Exquisite (in the Harbor). Sorry, haven't had the hardbacks this yr. My favorite shell-crabs in Md = Vince's but it's way up in Westminster and take out only.

An epilogue of sorts...my sister and I ended up eating at Obrycki's, and we had a great time. I hadn't been there in ~15 years, and it was a treat. We thought about Bo Brooke's and I will probably try to give them a try in the future. I knew about the places out in the county but wanted to stay closer to home this time. We split a dozen larges and had a combo appetizer of clams casino, steamed (and heavily spiced) shrimp, and a crabcake. It was all quite yummy.

And yes, I am well aware of G&M; have eaten there many, many times. But we decided on hard shells this time.

Thanks to everyone for your input!!

What were the prices of the crabs?

I think they were ~$68 a dozen for the larges. Something like that. I'm not that patient with extracting the meat, so I wanted the biggest crabs possible. (they didn't have any jumbos at Obrycki's the night we were there) Service was great; our waitress was very friendly and accomodating.

Thanks for the write.  Iwanago and Sundancer7 will be there in two weeks.  We want to do G&M and others while we are there.  I talked with the Mayor and he suggested  several places that we will visit.  We are staying at the Marriott at the Harbor.  We will probably visit the market also while we are there.

Sundancer7 - Not sure if your plans are cemented, but 2 places I like not too far from the Inner Harbor are L P Steamers and Capt Larry's.  Both are on Fort Ave and also not far from Ft McHenry.

L P Steamers  has good seafood and the crabs are usually reasonable.  If the weather is nice, they have rooftop eating.

Capt Larry's is a bar/pub and they have good specials, esp the sreamed shrimp and the crabcake sandwich (though not even close to G & M).
