I see you're from Huntley IL. I'm sure you know about Fitzgeralds Genoa Junction, right? If not, it's in Genoa City WI right over the IL- WI border. Been there a few times and all i can say is they do a great fish boil! They boil the whitefish and potatoes etc outside. They serve great coleslaw and this amazing rye bread. And great apple pie. We've only been on Sat so not sure if it's every night. My first trip there got me to the serving line three times-the hot buttered whitefish is out of this world! They also cook ribs and chicken on a grill, and have crablegs sometimes. Go tomorow night and stand outside by the fires to stay warm, then go back in to eat what is probably as good or better than any fish boil in DC.

I just learned last Summer. At a fish boil the fish is cooked outdoors in giant cauldrons (pots) over logs stacked upright under the pot. Think bonfire. Liquid is put in these pots and the fish guy lets it all come to a boil. He throws in some new Potatos, some whole onions, and lets it boil for a few. Then he adds large thick chunks of Whitefish to the boiling pot. Sparks and embers are floating from under his pots into the air. After a short time the fish guy throws some alcohol on the logs and the whole thing, kettle and all goes up in flames- big time! Think bonfire. I guess that burns off the scum at the top of the pot. He then serves the fish. He pours melted butter all over it, making it taste like tender lobster. You get the potatoes and onions served on the plate, cole slaw and rye bread & butter. I used to laugh at a fish boil before i tried it. In my above post it's ayce so it's a great deal and the place is packed, both indoors and out (big tent), in the historic Octagon House in Genoa City WI. Really delicious.

Have been to Door County several times but never tried the Fish Boil. Chunks of White Fish boiled in water with potatoes and onions never really appealed to me. However here in Texas some friends have just returned from Door County and are hosting a Fish Boil this evening. I'll report tomorrow

Not only does the White Gull Inn have a great fish boil, they also serve an excellent breakfast. Door County cherry stuffed French toast made with cream cheese and Door County cherry pancakes are two of their signature breakfasts. We stay at the Evergreen Hills Condos in Fish Creek. Winter in the Door is our favorite season with few people, zero traffic, and no families with screaming kids. Pure serenity. www.whitegullinn.com www.homesteadsuites.com

Fish boils are advertised everywhere, but we only went to one and I recommend it highly - The Sandpiper in Bailey's Harbor. The place advertises its fish as freshly caught right in Lake Michigan (just behind the restaurant) and from the flavor, I believe it. The fish is accompanied by potatoes and onions, and there was a good slice of cherry pie for dessert. For those with kids who don't eat fish (and that applies to us), you can order a pizza. My four-year-old told me it was the best pizza he'd ever had, but take that with a grain of salt, because he says that every time he eats pizza. The ambience is perfect, as well. A big room full of long tables. Everyone lines up at the front for their food.

I brought my family to a fish boil years ago at the Bay Shore Inn in Sturgeon Bay, Door County. Everything was salty and as all components were cooked together they lacked distinctive flavors. The chow line and picnic table setting made me feel like I was in a Dickens novel. Also, the portions were undersized. If I get another chance at one of these feasts you can have my place in line.

Once again, danimal beat me to the punch. The Sandpiper does have a tremedous fish boil. The only way the fish could be fresher is if you waded into that part of Lake Michigan itself. It's been great for the last 15 years I've gone to them (and probably longer than that). I also like the fact that you can get a pizza for the kids (which is nice for my two kids and two nephews, all under the age of 7). The fish boil is a truly distinctive part of the Door County experience, IMHO. The White Gull's fish boil is excellent as well, but my family tends to favor going there for their wonderful breakfasts (following the logic of chicagostyledog). I'm not sure I've ever had a bad meal in Door County come to think of it, strange as that sounds. I've been up there on summer vacations pretty much every year since I was eight months old (I'm almost 33...grumble grumble) and it's only gotten better in my mind.
