Best of NY Magazine 2008 - Steak "Piece By Piece"

Kudos to NY Magazine! They've defined the Best Steak in NYC!...By the cut!

Always made perfect sense to me...It's the most fair and professional way to look at the subject IMHO. Luger's is great, if you want a porterhouse steak. But, what if your first love is a NY Strip? Or perhaps a ribeye? So this article gives some props to Spark's and deservedly so!

Anyway, here are their Best of's Piece by Piece for "2008" as I jotted them down. Please excuse me if I've misspelled something...I'm posting for the concept that's what's important to me....I've never even heard of some of these places....

A Porterhouse - Go to Luger's

A NY Sirloin Strip - Go to Spark's

A Filet - Go to Primehouse - 381 Park Ave S

The Rib Eye - (bone-in) Go to Robert's Steakhouse - In Penthouse Executive Club (strip joint?) 603 W 45th

The Rib Chop (off the bone)- Go to Brandt's - 10 Columbus Circle

They also address two other favorites of some diners

Kobe Beef - Go to Craftsteak - 85 10th Ave

Hanger Steak - Go to BLT Prime - 111 E 22nd St..Not sure why they threw this one in (inexpensive cut) and they do sort of allude to that....

And with Robert's Steakhouse, one gets a side of "eye candy" , as well!
(I just learned it's located in a fancy strip club)

Most of the others I'd heard of before, definitely not Brandt's, though.
I tried to find info on that, but all I could find so far is "Brandt's meat distributor" ,etc; that it's a special boutique cut of beef, raised just right.
Could'nt find info on it being a restaurant.

They need to have Wolfgang's as a close runner up in the porterhouse division.
For those of us (like ME!) who tried getting into Luger's , but could'nt!
I want to eat my steak now, not come back in 3 months, when they could seat me....

I wonder if it's a different Robert's? Hey, I guess a strip club can have a great steak. Howard Stern use to extoll the virtues of Scores' food.

Thank you! I've always said that Sparks Steakhouse was the best for NY strip. It's been my personal favorite for over 30 years.

Steven..Any personal experience comments or friends' valued opinions on any of them other than Spark's and Lugers would be greatly appreciated...those two I know.

If you can't get into Lugers... Bobby Vans if pretty good.

A Filet - Go to Primehouse - 381 Park Ave S

Primehouse is part of the BR Guest "family" of restaurants, along with such others as Ruby Foo's & Wildwood BBQ (cringe at Wildwood BBQ).

I did not have a filet at Primehouse, when I dined there. So, I cannot attest to the rating. I am in no hurry to return to Primehouse (based on my overall dining experience), so I will have to miss out on the proposition of finding out for myself.

I enjoy Bobby Van's on West 50th, for an overall carnivorous dining experience. It is a "diciple" of Peter Luger's. It serves comparable high quality cuts, DELIGHTFUL Beef Wellington (imo) which is so very hard to find on restaurant menus these days, "easier" location (for me at least) no cranky attitudes from staff, beautiful atmosphere.

I would become a Vegan or a Nun (neither very likely at this point ), before I would return to Porter House (not Brandt's Brant chop is the cut, not the name of the restaurant) at 10 Columbus Circle Time Warner Center. I do not lose my temper at restaurants, but I lost my mind, at Porter House. From soup to NUTS, it was not pretty.
